When I saw that it was the 15th anniversary of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series being published in the United States, I started wondering...Why do so many people love the world of Harry Potter? I mean, the books have been translated into over 60 languages, the series is one of the best selling book series in history, there is a Harry Potter theme park, and there are eight movies! What’s so great about Harry Potter?
Now, don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Harry Potter. I have read those books so many times that my copies have begun to fall apart! I’m just curious as to why did this series gets so much attention. I have a few ideas about the fame of Harry Potter, but I definitely don’t think I solved the “mystery.”
First of all, I think that J. K. Rowling’s amazing imagination contributed to the success of Harry Potter. When an author attempts to write a fantasy book, they are faced with a harder task than one might imagine. To create a completely new world with absolutely no mistakes is practically impossible. We, as humans, have such a hard time coming up with new and exciting ideas, that when one amazing idea comes along, we love to hear it and experience it over and over again. When people read Harry Potter, they are transported to the wizarding world, where they get to experience growing up through the eyes of Harry Potter himself. Once you’re in the wizarding world, there is no backing out! You might begin to have fantasies or dreams about attending Hogwarts as a student, and sooner or later, you’ll probably start considering running for Minister of Magic!
In addition to the amazing world that J. K. Rowling created, I think that much of what draws people towards Harry Potter is the depth of the characters. There are so many characters in the stories that you will most definitely find someone who you can at least partially relate to. Are you book smart and interested in being top of your class? Meet Hermione Granger! Do you have a hard time in most of your classes? Do you need some inspiration? Meet Neville Longbottom! I could go on and on listing every single person (or creature) in the Harry Potter series and explaining each of their personalities. There are so many different kinds of characters in Harry Potter.
Not only can readers connect to the personalities of the characters, but they can also connect to the relationships between characters. The love that Harry, Ron and Hermione all feel for each other as best friends is heartwarming, the never-ending feud between Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy is one that is hard to beat, and the strong father-son connection between Harry Potter and Sirius Black is not one you’ll be happy to see end. Each relationship is obviously created with the characters in mind. Everyone is given what is needed to make the story better. Readers are able to connect to different relationships and possibly use the them as a mold for their own personal lives.
All in all, I believe that I only touched on a few of the many reasons for Harry Potter’s fame and success. The wizarding world that J. K. Rowling created is beautiful and so fun to explore, the characters are relatable and deep, and the relationships are true to the characters’ personalities and background stories.
I would be really interested in hearing if you have any other suggestions as to why the Harry Potter series is such a success. I love talking “Harry Potter” with other people!
