THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER

Want to learn more about witchcraft but don't want to slog through some boring --- and frankly weird --- New Age book about Wicca? Teenreads has the answer for you: the Circle of Three series of novels by Isobel Bird. The daily dramas and traumas of Beecher Falls High School are the canvas on which Bird paints her stories. The series stars three unlikely friends: Annie, the retro-funky math geek; Kate, the popular school sweetheart; and Cooper, the punky, wisemouth musician grrrl. The three are drawn together through class projects on witchcraft. Once they start their studies, they are hooked on the Craft. The Circle of Three series succeeds where others have failed by taking some of the "spookiness" out of witchcraft; Bird uses the girls' studies and explorations to explain the nature-based and Goddess-based traditions to readers who may be novices. Annie, Kate, and Cooper also deftly handle teenage dilemmas, supernatural scares, and the often confusing entanglements of friendship.

SO MOTE IT BE (Circle of Three #1)
by Isobel Bird
Avon
ISBN: 0064472914
235 pages

In SO MOTE IT BE, Volume One of the Circle of Three series, Kate Morgan is drawn to the "dark arts" after being assigned a report on witchcraft persecutions in her history class. To be sure, Kate has more important things on her mind than Wicca. The Beecher Falls High School Valentine's Day dance is quickly approaching, and Kate is jonesing to go with total babe football player Scott Coogan. Although Kate is pretty and popular, she's not as pretty as Terri Fletcher, as her rather superficial and snotty pals constantly remind her. This only makes Kate more determined to get Scott, so when she comes across a love spell while doing research for her history project, conservative Kate decides to cast it. What happens next? Hijinks and chaos, of course. Find out how she and her new friends, Annie and Cooper, are drawn into the wonderful world of Wicca. In straightforward prose, Bird explores the power of peer pressure, the definition of friendship, and the courage needed to honor your true calling --- whatever it may be.

WHAT THE CARDS SAID (Circle of Three #4)
by Isobel Bird
Avon
ISBN: 0064472949
208 pages

Annie puts her puzzle solving skills to the test in WHAT THE CARDS SAID. It seems she has a knack for Tarot card reading, using her deductive powers to "read" the story behind the cards rather than just guess at hokey predictions. Her talent gains her some fans among the popular girls --- a fact that disgusts rebel girl Cooper and makes Kate jealous as all her old friends try to kiss up to Annie. But do these members of the In Crowd like Annie for herself or are they just using her? And what happens when her readings become reality --- some with harmful results? Annie must learn to control and respect her new power --- or lose all her friends.

RING OF LIGHT (Circle of Three #6)
by Isobel Bird
Avon
ISBN: 0064472965
208 pages

At the end of the last book, Cooper decided to give up the study of Wicca. Hurt, scared and disillusioned by what she went through in the woods, Cooper bitterly turns her back on her friends and throws all her energy into her band and T. J., her crush. RING OF LIGHT is the most somber book of the series: Annie and Kate are devastated by Cooper's defection. In true Cooper fashion, Cooper herself misses her friends, but her pride won't let her call them. When illness and death threaten the girls, will Cooper return to aid her friends? Can the Circle of Three --- and the friendships --- be repaired?

I am definitely getting in line to wait for the next installment. I need to know what happens with Annie, Cooper, and Kate --- and hottie Tyler. The characters are so well drawn and the stories so engrossing that I read all six in one weekend. Bird skillfully entwines the stories with Wiccan legend, lore, and traditions. So I am fully into the Circle of Three series. How could I not be? Annie and I have the same glasses, after all.
