Authors You Love Give Us Their Summer Reading Lists
If you're anything like me (personality type: avid reader, chronic slacker), you leave
your required summer reading for the very last minute. I'm talking, three days before
school starts I gave up sleeping entirely plowed my way through MOBY DICK, PRIDE AND
PREJUDICE, THE SCARLET LETTER, and BILLY BUDD.
Which, of course, is not to say that instead of reading I sat around contemplating the
pros and cons of sunless tanning all summer. Oh, I read. I read boatfuls. It's just that I
read the books that I wanted to read, not the books that the all-powerful secondary
education fascists were forcing me into. I filled my sweaty, sunburned days and sticky,
sleepless nights with books like TIGER EYES by Judy Blume, THE SECRET HISTORY by Donna
Tart and JACOB HAVE I LOVED by Katherine Paterson.
Look. The fact is you're not going to read SIDDHARTHA and THE SOUND AND THE FURY all
summer --- I know it, you know it, Laurie Halse Anderson knows it, Jaclyn Moriarty knows
it, Margaret Peterson Haddix knows it, Alex Flinn knows it and Meg Cabot knows it. At some
point this summer you are going to read something FUN. And that's O.K. In fact, to help
you get started on your Purely-For-Pleasure reading list, 5 of your favorite teen authors
have offered Teenreads a peek at what's on their reading agenda for Summer 2001.
