Meg Cabot's Summer Reading List

What would go into *my* beach bag if *I* were looking some solid poolside reads for the summer?

NOT that copy of THE SCARLET LETTER my English teacher kept assuring me I'd love (I so did not), let me tell you.

For pure summer reading enjoyment, I would select from the following list of fabulous fiction:

CATCHER IN THE RYE
by J. D. Salinger
Lb Books
ISBN: 0316769487
214 pages

You've heard the buzz. Now see what everyone's been talking about. You won't be sorry.

CHRISTY
by Catherine Marshall
Avon
ISBN: 0380001411
501 pages

Don't let the dopey cover (or PAX TV version) fool you. This is the story of a nineteen year old girl who has the guts to take on a bunch of moonshiners AND a typhoid epidemic. Plus two (count them, two) guys are vying for her love. What could be better?

CATHERINE, CALLED BIRDY
by Karen Cushman
HarperTrophy
ISBN: 0064405842
212 pages

You think the Middle Ages weren't much of a laugh? Think again.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRDbr> by Harper Lee
Warner Books
ISBN: 0446310786
281 pages

Sure, they make you read it in school. But take a crack at it before some teacher ruins it for you. You'll probably end up agreeing with the rest of the world that it is simply the best novel ever.

JANE EYRE
by Charlotte Bronte
Signet
ISBN: 0451526554
461 pages

Yes, it is about 8,000 pages long. And yes, it's a little slow for the first few chapters. But once you get to the verbal sparring between Jane and hottie extraordinaire, Mr. Rochester, you will be hooked, as I was, by what is possibly the finest romance of all time (plus when you tell your teachers you've read it, they might forgive you for not reading THE SCARLET LETTER).
