This Week in Book History
November 29th marks the birthday two very important female authors: Louisa May Alcott and Madeleine L'Engle. The former was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1832, while the latter in New York City in 1918. When approached to write a book for young girls, Alcott agreed because she needed the money. Lucky for us she was broke, as LITTLE WOMEN may never have been! And L'Engle didn't start writing A WRINKLE IN TIME until she was older. In fact, it was rejected 26 times by different publishers! Of course, she got the last laugh -- the year after A WRINKLE IN TIME was finally published it won the Newberry Award.
