A note about Don'ts from Glamour's editor

By Cindi Leive

Everyone has their Don't days! Left: That's me in the most beautiful prom dress I'd ever seen, circa 1984. The mutton-chop sleeves, the blinding electric teal, the flammable taffeta; what was I thinking? Right: Need proof Glamour's Dos & Don'ts are real? Our roving photographer once snapped me on the street by accident.

No one wants to be a Glamour Don't.

No one tries to be a Glamour Don't.

In fact, appearing on the back page of Glamour with a black bar over your eyes is about the last thing any of us is going for when we get dressed in the morning.

But let's get one thing straight: We've all made fashion mistakes. And now, with the help of this book, we'll make many fewer! Our tips, tricks and mantras work for any woman, any body, any budget.

First, some background for you: Glamour's Dos & Don'ts began in the very first issue of the magazine, back in 1939. In the almost 70 years since then, we've tried to offer real fashion help for real women. That's the point of Dos & Don'ts: to learn from others' style slipups.

Our roving photographer, Ronnie Andren, shoots more than 170,000 photos a year, all over the country --- in cities big and small. He's covered fashion shows, Nascar races, spring break and political conventions. We share those pictures with readers in every issue, plus lots of snaps of models in their off-stage clothes and juicy pix of celebs at their fabulous best and, well, other times, too.

So gasp, point, laugh out loud (it's impossible not to) as you read the book and realize there's a Do message within every Don't: Seeing an example of what doesn't work always helps us figure out what does. ---Cindi Leive, editor in chief, Glamour
