Teen Board Question - December 2016, Part 1

Happy December, Teenreaders! The holidays are upon us, the end of the year is nigh and if you’re anything like us, you’re still shopping for those last-minute gifts for your friends and loved ones. Since we’re wrapping (see what we did there?) up the end of the year, we asked our Teen Board members two questions. First, we asked how many books they read this year. Then we asked whether or not they would be giving books as gifts this year and which ones they'd be giving. As a bonus, members were also invited to tell us about the best book (or bookish) gift they have ever received.

I read around 125 books this year, though I'm hoping to get a few more in before the New Year! I'm giving a couple books as gifts this year! I gave a copy of THRONE OF GLASS by Sarah J. Maas, and I'll be giving a couple of nonfiction books as well! --- Isabel C.

I read a lot of books this year. I do not think I will count them because it just reminds me of the social interactions I skipped and I feel somewhat guilty. My older sister and I are at the point where all we do is ask for books for Christmas. My sister and I almost always give each other Harry Potter-themed gifts. Last year I wrote and typed an official Hogwarts letter detailing how her letter had been hidden in the castle for six years by Peeves and was only recently found by Head Boy of Hufflepuff Teddy Lupin (we go all out). This year we are both reading HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD. I think the best book gift I have ever received has to be my GONE WITH THE WIND trivia book and ornament. I love quizzing myself on my knowledge of the book (I know, I have no life). Anyways, I love receiving any old classic novel for Christmas and hope to receive some classic southern literature of dark romanticist poetry and short stories for Christmas. A Merry Christmas to all book lovers who would love nothing more than to curl up next to the sparkling Christmas tree with some warm tea and the latest addition to their book collection. Charles Dickens said it best, "God bless us! Everyone!" --- Lauren H.

I estimate that I read about 45 books this year. I am not giving books this year, but here is one of my absolute favorite book-related gifts: a library card tote and zippered pouch! --- Alize J.

I've read about 15 books this year. I haven't yet received or given any books away this year. --- Jeremy H.

I have no idea how many books I read this year! It has been a long year full of a lot of books. If I had to guess I would probably say that I read somewhere between 35 and 40. I should really try and keep track one year... The best bookish gift that anyone could possibly give me is a gift card to my favorite book store, The Bookies. That way I can pick out all the new books I haven't had a chance to read yet. --- Aliza M.

This year, I originally set out to read fifty books by January 1st. I actually surpassed my goal by two books, and I think I'll be finished one or two more by New Year's Day! My favorite reads this year were definitely KANE AND ABEL and the THRONE OF GLASS series. Talking about Sarah J. Maas' series, I am gifting my Secret Santa her first two books from the THRONE OF GLASS. Since she loved RED QUEEN, I am pretty sure she's going to love it. --- Rachel D.

This year I have read 34 books! I’m still determined to keep busting out some reads before the New Year so hopefully that number can grow a little bit, but if not I’m pleased to have read that amount (it’s also more than the number of books I read last year so that in itself is an accomplishment). This is definitely my favorite time of the year as well, so you can bet that I will be giving some gifts! I recently gifted a friend THE UNBECOMING OF MARA DYER which is a phenomenal paranormal book series and I also gifted ROMEO AND/OR JULIET which seems like a fun chooseable-path adventure book to keep you from boredom. One of my most prized possessions is actually a bookish goody I received last year from a friend and that is my Katniss Everdeen FunkoPOP. Long story short, I love it to death and am always trying to show it off on my bookshelf!! --- Taylor F.

As of now, I’ve read 63 books this year! I didn’t manage to top last year’s number or complete my Goodreads goal, but this year was also much more hectic and I’m proud of how much I read. I’m actually not giving many books this year, but I’m in a bookish secret santa and I’m giving my person THROUGH THE DARK by Alexandra Bracken and READY PLAYER ONE by Ernest Cline! The best bookish gift I’ve received is a scarf my friends gave me with a chunk of the actual text from LES MISERABLES. It’s super cute and comfy while also showing off my bookish side. --- Brynn S.

I have read a total of 73 books currently, but I hope to read during the winter break. I'm kind of disappointed in myself, but this school year has been hectic. It's hard to read. I typically read during my bus ride, and I've had to stay late for my newspaper a lot. I honestly wouldn't mind a Barnes & Noble gift card. Then, I can get a lot of preorders for free, which is great, but I'd prefer some animes over actual books. A gift card is something I can use, though. --- Wren L.

The holidays are a perfect time for me to not only ask for all the books I have been waiting to read, but to also share my love of books with my friends and family. But first, it's always nice to look back at what I read last year. I read about 75 books in 2016, a smaller number than normal, but full of so many wonderful reads. One book I read this year that I plan to give to one of my friends is THE SONG OF ACHILLES by Madeline Miller. This is a wonderful retelling of the Greek myth of the hero Achilles. One of my friends is fascinated with ancient history, and I know she would love this story. I also plan to give my sister A MILLION WORLDS WITH YOU by Claudia Gray. This is the third book in the Firebird series, an amazing series that my sister showed me earlier this year. When I saw that the new installment came out recently, I knew I had to get it for her. In return, I have received many amazing bookish gifts in the past. My absolute favorite is a poster. On it depicts a map of various fictional worlds. It includes Panem, Hogwarts, Middle-Earth, Narnia, Algaësia and more, in various shapes and sizes. I adore it, and love talking about the places it depicts whenever a newcomer sees it in my wall. --- Caitlyn K.

I'm never good at counting all the books I read! According to Goodreads, I have read 20 books, so I probably have read around 35 books this year. I'm terrible with updating Goodreads! I will not be giving any bookish presents or books this year, but the best bookish gift I have ever received was when I asked for Barnes & Noble gift cards for my bat mitzvah! That was a whole lot of gift cards! --- Rebecca D.

I have read 163 books so far this year, and by the end of the month, it will hopefully be closer to 170! If I were going to give books as gifts this year, I would give the screenplay for FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM, because everyone is a Harry Potter fan even if they don't know it yet. The best bookish gift that I have ever received would have to be my hardcover chest of all of the books in the Harry Potter series! --- Grace P.

I read 65 books this year, but I hope I can squeeze one or two more in before December closes out. In the past couple of years, I have ALWAYS given books to all of my friends and relatives. This year, though, I have had barely any time to even Christmas shop. The best bookish gift I have ever received, though, was a hardcover copy of my favorite book, DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE by Laini Taylor. For so long I had the first book in a very small paperback edition, and then the last two books in the trilogy in HUGE hardcover editions. Because of this, receiving DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE in hardcover was SO satisfying. No one ever understands the joy I feel when my series are all in the same editions. It is simply one of the best feelings in the world. --- Bryn D.

Okay, don’t shame me for this, but I actually don’t write down how many books I read every year. Yikes. But I do know that this year, I haven’t read as much as I would’ve liked. My list of books and my TBR pile have just grown. So one of my New Year’s Resolutions for next year is going to be to read more, which is funny for a bookworm like me. I’m not going to be giving any books as gifts, but I will say the best book gifts I have been given (besides actual books of course) are my book t-shirts. I wear them often and I love being able to show my nerdy pride off. Happy Holidays! --- Rebecca N.

Overall, I have read about 10 books this year, an all-time low for me. I have not received any book related gifts this year, unfortunately. However, I have given many old science fiction books as presents! Unfortunately, it seems that not too many of my gift receivers share my love of 90s era science fiction. --- Vaishnavi S.

I've read 60 books this year, and I lived a lot of them. One I think everyone should read is AND I DARKEN by Kiersten White, so I would definitely give that book as a gift. It's a bit long, but it's hard to notice since it's so interesting and has such a good message. The best bookish gift I received was a mug that said, "My bookshelf is my boyfriend" on it. It's too perfect to use, so it just sits on top of my bookshelf. --- Harleen K.

I have read 54 books this year and my original goal was 52! This year I have already bought myself some Christmas book gifts but also have bought THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER for a friend. --- Kaela N. (17)
