MY LAST DAYS AS ROY ROGERS by Pat Cunningham Devoto, 4 1/2 stars

No, THIS IS NOT A CHEESY COWBOY BOOK!  Tabatha is a girl growing up in Alabama in the 1950's. Tab defies what expected of her and breaks many of the cliches of Southern America in the '50's. She deals with polio scares, breaking racial boundaries, and a bootlegger whom she claims in the human form of Satan.
This book is painfully funny, even if you don't know jack about the 1950's or Southern humor

GO ASK ALICE By Anonymous, 5 stars

This book deals with the true story of a teen girls problem with drugs. Its twist is that her journey takes place in the 1960s. GO ASK ALICE is a moving story that shocks the reader with what it is really like to have problems with drugs and how dealing with society back then was just as hard as it is today. This book about a real life struggle is a  must-read that swallows you into the characters life. You won't be able to put it down until its finished, and then you'll want to read it again.

ECougars@aol.com
I just finished reading HARLEY LIKE A PERSON by Cat Bauer. It was really good. It is about a young teenager who is so positive that she was adopted, she finds all of theses clues that lead her to her real father. It is funny, because she does normal things, and gets into trouble like normal teenagers. It is just an interesting book that I recommend. I would give it 4 stars.

bmalford@bellsouth.net
I just got finished with the book SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson. I give it 5 stars. This is book was amazing I couldn't put it down! It really captures how harsh high school can be. The book is about a girl named Melinda and she is an outcast and the only way how she got through the ninth grade year was in her art class. But she always wasn't an outcast read the book and find out why.

JENN612@aol.com
I definitely recommend Maya Angelou  I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS. I give it 5 stars because it was very interesting and once I started reading it I couldn't put the book down.

IsisDawn111@aol.com
THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER by Stephen Chbosky, 5 stars
This book is relatively short (I finished it in about 2 days) but really interesting also.  It is a series of letters from a boy named Charlie to an unnamed person. It takes place in Charlie's freshman year of high school, in the early 90's. Charlie is a very interesting character; he is a wallflower, the very opposite of popular, but seems very content to be that way. He is very innocent in many ways, such as in relationships with people, but also does 'rebellious' things like smoking and getting high. The end of the book reveals a painful secret about Charlie, but it is ultimately an inspiring story. I highly recommend this book to any person in high school, or to those who have already gone through it.

BabyLuv891@aol.com
I just finished reading SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson. I give it 5 stars. It's my new favorite book! I love the way she writes. The entire book is full of description and details that make you feel as if you are a character in the book. I found myself thinking like Melinda, the main character, and wondering what I would do in her situation. Melinda is basically a high school outcast, and her feelings and emotions are so real that I think we all can relate to them a little bit. I would recommend this book for EVERYBODY!

Punkrawkjunky@aol.com
I recommend THE VIRGIN SUICIDES by Jeffrey Eugenides to any teen reader who enjoys a great book. It's a dark novel about 5 sisters who are confined to growing up in the overprotective home of their parents & they all ultimately solve their problems in a tragic way ... suicide. It takes place in the mother of suburbia during the 70's. This book has dark humor, obsession, not so lovely love stories & the author has a wonderful way of describing the imaginary world he created for the 5 Lisbon sisters and the situations he has put them in. I give this book an automatic 5 stars!

LEFT BEHIND series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, 4 stars
These books are thrilling and a definite summer read for everyone!  They chronicle the time after the Rapture, which is the return of Christ. This period of seven years is called the Tribulation in which Earth and it's inhabitants go through grueling trials. Many books have been written on this time, but the Left Behind series is up to date and in your face real. The books appeal to all readers, even non-Christians. The series has eight books out now, and the ninth is due out this fall. Get hooked on the greatest book series ever!

SHADE'S CHILDREN by Garth Nix, 5 stars

Since new evil leaders took over the world, teenagers are killed for their body parts. A few tough ones manage to escape the dorms and find shelter with Shade-who is not quite man, not quite machine. The trick is they have to risk their lives fighting back. Shade is becoming more ruthless every day. How far will he go, risking his children?

The Wrinkle In Time Trilogy (A WRINKLE IN TIME, A WIND IN THE DOOR, A SWIFTLY TILTING PLANET) by Madeleine L'engle, 4 stars

Something most of us read when we were younger (But always nice to re-read), about Meg, her little brother Charles, and the fantastic adventures they, their family, and their friends engage in. Also check out MANY WATERS, AN ACCEPTABLE TIME, and A RING OF ENDLESS LIGHT.

WATERSHIP DOWN by Richard Adams, 4 stars

A nice book for all ages about (of all things) rabbits! Yes, that's right, rabbits. Seriously, though, if you opened it up in the middle of the book you'd never know it.
They have to make it to Watership Down and start a new colony after their old one was destroyed by humans.

DAUGHTER OF THE STARS by Phyllis A. Whitney, 5 stars
I just finished the book DAUGHTER OF THE STARS by Phyllis A. Whitney. I gave it five stars because it was a fantastic book, and a great mystery. Whitney kept me thinking about who did it the whole time I was reading it. The characters are all very realistic, and sometimes it felt like I was really there. This book has it all --- mystery, romance, history...you name it, this book has it. I definitely recommend you read this book! I hope you enjoy it!  :-)

BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY by Helen Fielding, 3 stars.
This was an interesting and humorous book! Bridget seems a little strange, but I think everyone can relate to some of the things in her journal entries. I can't wait to see the movie!

STAR TREK FEDERATION by Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens, 5 stars
I am currently reading STAR TREK FEDERATION by Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens. I give the book the book five (5) stars. It is a very well written novel that features the crews of both Enterprise starships. The book includes a lengthy list of characters from some of the Star Trek series. They include but are not limited to: Captain Kirk, Captain Picard, Zefram Cochrane, Data, Worf, Scotty, Dr. McKoy, Spock, etc. The book is about a struggle that both crews must overcome in order to fulfill their missions. As the book progresses, both crews must work together in order to successfully complete their mission. This is a great read, and I'd recommend it to any fan of science fiction!

A LESSON BEFORE DYING by Ernest J. Gaines,  5 stars
Usually when summer reading books are assigned, one expects a long, drawn out abuse of literature. But with A LESSON BEFORE DYING I was completely and pleasantly surprised. This book is a good read all around, but especially for African American readers. The story takes place in a small community on Louisiana, where a man has been sentenced to death for a crime he has not committed. I could not put this book down. I read it in about 3 days and I finished it at about 2 a.m. this morning. Since I had to read if for school, I had to take notes and write down my thoughts about certain passages, but for once that was very helpful. This is the type of book that you want to think about a lot because there are a lot of messages that are conveyed without words. In dealing with race and gender, the characters in this book force you to think about the world around you regardless of race or gender.

ENDER'S GAME by Orson Scott Card, 5 Stars
The best book I have ever read is positively ENDER'S GAME, by far. It gets five out of five stars from me. It would have ten out of ten, twenty out of twenty!

It's about a boy called Ender. He is called a third because in the time and place of the story, you could only have three children. His brother and sister were close to the military geniuses the government wanted, so they made an exception for Ender to be born. They watched him for a while, then finally stopped, or seemed to. He went to a battle school out in space, where he was the quickly the best despite his young age because of his cleverness, then skipped a whole school, to train to fight aliens called the Buggers, because they didn't want a third invasion.

Meanwhile on Earth his brother tricked his sister into helping him take over the world. He soon became very powerful. Ender had a game he played, and was farther than anyone else had ever gotten. In fact, the game was supposed to end, but he manipulated the game!

At the school they simulated the buggers to practice but what Ender didn't know was that he really was fighting them. When he finds out he is horribly angry.

Ender goes off with a space colony to inhabit another planet. Somewhere along the line, he finds a queen egg so he would one day repopulate them to be nice. He brought it everywhere with him. He wrote a long book talking about the life the queen that gave birth to the egg had lived, guessing but somehow knowing. Telling a story, even if short, becomes something everyone does.

This story was beyond great. The characters were told with exceptional realistic qualities and reactions, and it amazed me. I would recommend ENDER'S GAME for any reader.

Flowerjas@aol.com
A good book I recommend reading is LIFE IN THE FAT LANE by Cherrie Bennett.
It is about a girl who had it all. Looks, popularity, great parents (as she thought), money, and the title of homecoming queen. After she wins the crown, she notices that she is starting to gain weight. No matter how much she diets she still gain weights. I don't want to give the book away so you have to read it!  I rate this book 4 stars.

Reesec9801@aol.com
MONSTER by Walter Dean Myers
I give this book 5 stars. It gives a lot of insight on what the main character is thinking. It gives informing details about prison life. This book has drama from page one. I loved the book so much that I couldn't put it down and finished it within a few hours. I would recommend this book to any courtroom drama lover. I also liked the fact that it was written as a script to a movie and I would love if a movie based on this novel was actually made.

CaYLeeBuTterFLy@aol.com
I am reading THE FIGHTING GROUND by Avi. It is a short novel but I rate it a Five (5). It tells a story of a boy who wanted to fight in the Revolutionary War but his father does not want him to fight. When he is offered a chance to fight he jumps to it... that's as far as I've gotten. So far it is great.

BRIDGET JONES' DIARY by Helen Fielding, ***** (5 stars)
This book is hilarious. She changes in the blink of an eye and surprises you every time!

Horsegal1331@aol.com
DAWN ROCHELLE by Lurlene McDaniel, 5 stars
This has to be the BEST book I have ever read (trust me I have read a lot). It tells the story of a young girl whose life is changed by cancer. It talks about her day-to-day struggle of trying to fit in and make everyone understand what she is going through. If you like good sad books with good endings then you have to read it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Delphi180@aol.com
I just finished THE MISTS OF AVALON by Marion Zimmer Bradley a few days ago (and just picked up the prequel). I loved it. It's one of those books that stays with you, and as soon as you turn the last page and read the last word, you *have* to sit there and think about it for a while. And then you get all depressed because it's over. The book is a retelling of the King Arthur legends, only from the point of view of Guinevere, Morgan le Fay, and Igraine. Morgan le Fay is trying to preserve the old religion, and Avalon, in the midst of a rise of Christianity. It's a long book -- about 900 pages --- but the time is worth it, absolutely.

Rootbeer5@aol.com
NORWEGIAN WOOD by Haruki Murakami, 5 stars

I think this book is wonderfully written. Murakami manages to make the majority of the story a flashback in a way that is not confusing and keeps the reader captive to the very end. The narrator of the story, Toru, is a character that is easy follow, however crazy some of his friends may be. Throughout the book, as Toru remembers his college days and his relationship with the mysterious Naoko, the reader is made aware of death and its effect on other human beings. Toru thinks that death is only a part of life. The books does involve a lot of death, but somehow, it's not that depressing, because Toru is able to deal with his feelings about the death of his loved ones. However, the books explicit scenes may be too sickening for some
readers.

CROSSES By Shelley Stoehr, 5 stars
I just got done reading CROSSES by Shelley Stoehr. This story is the portrayal of a troubled teens. Two best friends take up the punk lifestyle and begin cutting themselves, first for fun, then because the physical pain helps to ease the mental pain. Though the main focus of cutting is what the book is based around it also ties in the horrors of drugs and alcohol. While reading this book you can just imagine what the girls are going through. I suggest that other teens read this book, it kind of makes one think twice about how good that they actually have it compared to the lives of Nancy and Katie, that's why I give the book 5 stars.

SUMMER PROMISE by Robin Jones Gunn, 5 stars
This is the first book of Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller series. This author is a Christian, inspirational author and I simply love her books because they're so beautifully insightful and pure. Readers will meet characters that are just like today's teens --- characters whose feelings, thoughts, and experiences can be related to. The whole series will give readers a whole new view on the thing we call "love"; it illustrates not a love based on physical attraction, but an indescribably pure inner beauty love. A definite read for those who are "dreamers" =)

Luna109@aol.com
I found SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson when I was scanning through a local book store. It was the luckiest find of my life. it tells the story of a teenage girl who is black balled at her school and loses the most basic of abilities, to speak. SPEAK is a treasure trove of pain, well timed wit and the gritty realities of teenage life. I found it so easy to slip into the melodic rhythm of Anderson's words. SPEAK is both disturbing and inspiring. It truly speaks to outsiders and those who feel outside. SPEAK deserves 5 stars and a place on everyone's shelf.

CarolinaSweetT@aol.com
SHE'S COME UNDONE by Wally Lamb, 5 stars
Even though this book is a bit racy for teenagers, it opened my eyes to the negativity of youth today, and how someone can overcome heavy obstacles. The protagonist of the book is overweight and cynical, and is forced to deal with her life by being put into challenging (and sometimes hilarious!) situations. It is a definite page turning and life altering novel.
