I dont normally find myself reading children's books because they frustrate me. But I have finally found a series I have fallen in love with: A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. From the first pages of The Bag Beginning (book one in the series) Mr. Snicket has me rolling with laughter. It all begins when you meet the three children. Violet, a 14 year old girl whom you can aways tell when she is inventing things because her hair is tied up in a ribbon and doesnt want to be bothered by something as trivial as her hair. Klaus, who is 12 and the only boy, loves to read. And Sunny is the infant, who is greatly fond of random things with her four, very sharp teeth. One hazy day the three children are at the beach when Mr. Poe, the family's banker, comes to tell them there has been a terrible fire at their mansion. Their parents and all of their belongings have parished in the fire. Afterward, they are sent to live with Count Olaf, a distant relative whom they have never met. His home is filthy, he leaves them all day with huge lists of chores, and expects them to cook for not only him, but also the ten horrible members of his theater troupe. And things only get worse from there.

Two of the things I love best about these books, petty as they may be, keep me longing for me. For instance, Lemony will use the word rickity to describe the trolly the children take to the beach and will then say something like here the word rickity means something about the lines of "unstable" or "most likely to collapse when the three children are riding upon it to the beach." Also, Sunny can not speak much Englsih, being only a baby. Instead she screams random words like "florp" After Sunny's blurt a sentance follows saying: Its hard to tell what she's saying but it may be "Look at the man with the square looking head that is ammerging from out of the fog coming ever so closer towards us!"

These books will keep you asking for more. With nine books in all, these are not books to be left off your "To Read" list.

Some of the best books that I have read lately were published a long time ago. One of my favorites series is defintely the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery. I have read those books countless times. I think that they are really just so beautiful. The writing is captivating, and the stories are a refreshing respite from all the stories about totured souls that are so common right now. There's nothing wrong with characters that have a little grit, but these books just have so much old-fashioned charm. I have heard Anne described as wierd, which I think does not describe her at all, though she is hardly average. I think she is a truly original, and unique(in the good way) person. PLus there is a really sweet love story in there.

My other favorite is the Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, which a unbelievable story. The writing is scintillating, and the amount of detail the Tolkien put into it seriously, just blows my mind. There are also tons of books that explain the history of Middle-Earth, where the stories are set, all worth checking out. Plus, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman is a great fantasy trilogy.

I am reading A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith. Its about childhood and family relationships in the early 1900's.It is a pretty big book but it is pretty good. Also I have read What My Mother Doesn't Know by Sonya Sones. It is probably the BEST book that I have read. It is about a girl's first and second loves and it is easy to relate to.

Witch Child by Celia Rees is the one of the best books I have read and it is a compelling, dramatic, energetic story. It is full of sadness and excitement and I would reccomend it to people of about 12- 15 year old. I think Mary Newbury is a fantastic Character and I can't wait until I get Sorceress next week.

Right now I'm reading The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks for our school book club. Although it's long, it's also as good as everyone says it is. I am not that far yet, so right now I give it four (4) stars. This is good fantasy.

I'm also reading Words by Heart by Ouida Steynsen. I picked it up at Barnes and Noble. It is a short books about a black girl who wins a bible verse contest in a white community. Her family is then targeted because she beat the white boy. That's as far as I got. I give this three (3) stars.

Read the book Night by Elie Wiesel. It's autobiographical about Elie in a concentration camp during the Holocaust with his father trying to survive through deportations, work, very little food, and even an amputation to the liberation. Elie uses great quotes, and this book is so well written in order for you to feel Elie's experience. I give this five (5) stars.

I recently read Freak the Mighty and The Giver. They were both really good books, and really moving too. In Freak the Mighty the end made me cry, because you get so attached to these characters. And in The Giver it was just about this place were you think every thing is right and the way it supposed to be and then you are a preteen you find out that everything you know is a lie. I would give them both the BEST ratings you can give!!
