Forever by Judy Bloom
Rating: 2 Stars
This book, I was shocked to find, was inappropriate for some ages. If I had to "rate it", as they do for movies, I would have given it an "R". When I saw Judy Bloom's name on the cover, I assumed it would be cute and clean, as her other books are. However, my friends and I started to refer to this book as "that porn book". It was that bad. The story line was great! I enjoyed reading it. I just would like everyone to know what they're about to read. My mother, who is a middle school teacher, almost put that on her shelf. That book is not for middle schoolers.

Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Rating: 4 Stars
Christopher Paolini's ERAGON has been a must read since it came out in 2003. Avid young readers have been begging for more ever since they put it down. Action packed and filled with magic and battles, it is a delight to fiction lovers. Filled with characters and betrayal, this is still a definite need-to-read if you didn't get to read it in its early years. So stop by your local Barnes & Noble or Borders and pick it up. You have to. This is a great book by a great author, and it has sequels! And there is a little bit of romance in it too! Will Saphira and Eragon make it to the Varden? Should they trust Murtagh? Read to find out.

My Mother the Cheerleader by Robert Sharenow
Rating: 4 Stars
This book is about a girl who goes to an integrated school. You may look at the title of the book and think that that fact is not relevant, but really it is. Her mother is not the peppy cheerleader but actually the opposite --- a racist who protests against blacks being educated in the same learning space as whites. Her mother marches outside the school with signs excluding blacks from school, and she has to deal with it everyday. Read this book to find out what adventures this poor girl has with her mother the cheerleader.

This was an absolutely amazing book! It had a great and illustrious plot, a wonderful and descriptive setting, and above all, fantastic characters. Stephenie Meyer did a great job of portraying each character in his or her own unique personality with fun little quirks for all of the main characters. My two favorites were Bella and Edward because they make such a good pair and because their personalities mesh so well. I also loved the new character that was created during this book --- she was truly amazing! Once again, I loved this book and recommend it to all who haven't read it. This book is incredible! It shows a completely different side of World War II that you will never discuss in History class. It really gives you an appreciation for everything our troops do, in this case making an unbreakable code in Navajo. It amazed me what these brave Navajos did for our country. This is an autobiography (of sorts) about a journalist in the '40s. The book begins with Esther in New York, fulfilling her duties as junior editor after winning a contest. But the book slowly evolves into something darker. Even though Esther has so many opportunities, she surrenders to the inner abyss of her soul, and spirals downward into a mental breakdown. All while this is happening, she is recounting her past memories with her college sweethearts, and Mother. A pretty good read :)

Under a War-Torn Sky by L. M. Elliot
Rating: 5 Stars
This book is for anyone who loves adventure novels with historic backgrounds. It's 1944 and Hank, a 19-year- old American bomber, gets shot down during his 15th mission and crash lands near the Swiss border. Along his treacherous journey back home, many people feel sympathy for him and help as much as they can to get back to the states. A lot of French is mixed in the text, so if you can read the French part, you might understand the story a little better than someone who can read it. Anyway, it's a great World War II novel and I believe French-speaking WWII buffs will get the most out of it. For those who don't fall under that category, this is still great award-winning historical fiction.

This series is one of the top ten I have read. If you like fantasy that relates to stuff in the real world, read this series! Basically, it's about two sisters whose parents mysteriously disappear. The are put into a horrible orphanage and go from one foster parent to the next until their grandmother (who they thought was dead) claims them. They then discover that they are the living descendants of the Brothers Grimm, and that the books they wrote were actually accounts of fairy tale mysteries! This series has everything! Surprising twists, hilarious fairy tale jokes, and an addicting plot that makes you not able to put it down! I would definitely recommend this series to just about all ages!

Rating: 5 Stars
UGLIES by Scott Westerfeld is an amazing book set in a future time frame. The main character is a girl named Tally, who has wanted to become pretty her whole life. "Becoming Pretty" is a surgery you get when you turn sixteen that makes you incredibly gorgeous, and for the rest of your life, all you do is go to parties and have fun. After this operation, you move from Uglyville to New Pretty Town, where the excitement begins. Tally's best friend Peris has already had the operation and is waiting for Tally, but he seems a little different. Meanwhile Tally has done mischievous pranks all her life out of boredom. Right after Peris is turned pretty, Tally meets an equally audacious young girl named Shay who teaches Tally how to hoverboard and do many cool new tricks. As Shay and Tally get closer and closer as friends, Tally soon discovers Shay does not want to get the "Pretty Operation". Shay runs away to an secret living space where other runaways have ventured to called the Smoke. Soon Tally realizes the horrible twist on the operation, and perhaps why her old friend Peris was acting so strange. If you are looking for a book and are ready to read some action and a can't-put-down kind of story, UGLIES is your best bet. Please buy this book --- you will not regret it.

Wherever Nina Lies by Lynn Weingarten
Rating: 2 Stars
I am a high school librarian and I'm always looking for new YA authors and new books to add to our school shelves. This novel won't be one that I will purchase. I wanted to like it --- the ingredients seemed to be there. Unfortunately, this story just never got off the ground. The rest of the plot was thin, contrived, and unrealistic as it evolved. The character of Ellie was the only one that was somewhat developed; the supporting cast was totally stereotypical --- from the absent, completely clueless mother to the gay boss at the coffee shop. The cross-country trek Ellie takes with a stranger, a "hot guy" named Sean, was intrinsically unbelievable and relied on some assumptions about the ability of teenagers to rent hotel rooms at their age and have access to that kind of time away from home, school, jobs, and also the amount of money needed. I don't mind a stretch of credulity in a teen novel now and again, but this was way too much from start to finish. The story fell apart for me as Sean and Ellie start on their harebrained journey in his car, meeting up with random people following a band; the clues or whatever the drawings are just made no sense. There was never any mention of the family enlisting detectives or police to look for this missing girl, the mother's lack of interest in the whereabouts of her daughter, the denouement and revelation of the reason for the disappearance and the lack of contact --- well it just didn't work. I had to force myself to finish. There was no suspense in the book. Ellie was immature with very poor judgment, her friendship with Amanda didn't feel realistic, and the way the book ended all added up to a forgettable read by a debut author. Recommendation: Skip it.

Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Weiss
Rating: 4 Stars
This was a really good book. It took me a couple times to really pick it up and start reading it, but after I got past the slow beginning, it was dramatic. The book has a pretty sick storyline and made me realize how lucky I am. Meredith was promised 9 years of safety, but they let her father out after 3. Her father sexually abused her for years and even though she's told her mother about it, not much was done. Let me rephrase that, *nothing* was done. The mother loved the father so much and didn't want him to go to jail. So, when Meredith told someone about it, her mother was furious and told her it was all her fault. Meredith had ruined the family. You're probably wondering why I didn't give this book a five instead of four. I rarely give out fives. Twilight and Harry Potter have fives. So of course, hardly anything can compete with Twilight and Harry Potter, but Such a Pretty Girl is definitely up there on my list.

This book takes you deep into the heart of a teen girl who struggles with the reality of who she is. She has an abusive, alcoholic father, and a silent-to-the-bone mother. When she is sent away for the summer to live with her aunt, dark secrets unravel about her father's past. She also meets someone, someone who loves her for being herself, but at the last moment, will it all come crashing down?

Finally, a real look into teenage life without all the Hollywood. It's full of real thoughts that we all think but very few speak.
