Dear Readers,

I love candy and as my mother will definitely attest, I'm a big fan of wearing stupid looking clothes. I should love Halloween. And I did --- until 1994 when, as slightly old trick-or-treater out for a quick tour around the neighborhood with my plastic pumpkin, I was taunted and assaulted with shaving-cream soaked toilet-paper blobs by a gang of fifth-graders dressed like rejects from the Insane Clown Posse.

"Aren't you a little, like, old to be trick-or-treating?" they jeered as I tried to deflect the soggy bombs hurtling toward me with my magic shield (What? All dragon-slayers have magic shields, do they not?). "Aren't you a little immature to be out without your mommies?" I snapped, giving them my best "don't make me use this plastic sword" stare. "Don't you think you should take up running?" they shot back. "Why in the world would I do that?" I asked because, really, why were they concerned with my exercise routine? "Because we are going to chase you." And then they did.

Ever since then, I've opted against trick-or-treating in favor of staying home, reading a scary book and stealing candy from my younger siblings. Trust me, there is infinitely less shame in this then being a 16 year-old dragon slayer with a magic shield and a plastic pumpkin and a bunch of crazy elementary-schoolers chasing after you.

Have a very HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
