| Announcing the Claudia Seaman Poetry Award |
| Happy February!
So how many snow days have you had this year? After last week's record snow in New York, we're wondering what it must be like to live somewhere where there are NO snow days! Here the schools have been closed at least 4 days already this year, and we know other parts of the country have been hit even harder. When the wind is howling and the snow is blowing, it's a great time to read.
Once again we are promoting the Claudia Seaman Poetry Award this year.
The award was established in 1983 in Poughkeepsie, New York, by the Seaman family in honor of their daughter and sister, Claudia, a young poet. With the help of the Community Foundation of Dutchess County and the Teenreads.com website, the award, a national competition open to all students in grades 9 through 12, is held each year to encourage, support, and promote young writers. With a $500 cash prize and publication of the winning poem in the literary journal HANGING LOOSE, it is hoped that the Claudia Ann Seaman Poetry Award will help keep interest in reading and writing poetry alive and well at the high school level.
The Claudia Ann Seaman Poetry Award is open to all high school students across the country. Each writer may submit two poems on any subject and in any form as long as their submission does not exceed 10 pages in length. The deadline for entering this annual contest is May 1, 2003.
For all you poets out there, get writing!

It's your chance to be a trendsetter!
This month's book is DANCING IN MY NUDDY-PANTS: Even Further Confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Louise Rennison, which is due in stores in March 2003. Aren't you just a bit curious what Nuddy-Pants are?

| And The Winners Are.... |
2000 marked the debut of the Michael L. Printz Award, which was established to recognize a book that "exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature," according to the Young Adult Library Services Association division of the American Library Association. The Award is named for Michael L. Printz, a former school librarian at Topeka West High School in Kansas. Throughout his career he was a respected colleague and teacher, and an active and dedicated member of YALSA. He passed away in 1996.
The Printz winner and up to four honor books (or runners up) are chosen annually by a committee of nine YALSA members. Read on to see what was chosen.
