Fresh Starts, Fresh Reads

September is a great month. Sure, we know that back to school = lots of work, but it also means getting to see all your friends and picking up the clubs and sports you missed over the summer. The weather --- at least in New York --- is still warm, so afternoons and weekends still can be spent outside. Everything feels fresh and new, a theme that many of the books featured this month on Teenreads.com have picked up on in a big way.

Now that school is starting, you’re probably wishing you could just forget all about homework and exams. (Seriously, how easy was it to forget HOMEWORK for a couple of months?) But what if that actually happened? In this month’s featured book, MEMOIRS OF A TEENAGE AMNESIAC by Gabrielle Zevin --- author of the fabulous young adult novel ELSEWHERE --- the main character, Naomi, wakes up in an ambulance, her memory totally gone. But losing her memory causes more problems than you can imagine and upsets every relationship in her life. Reviewer Norah Piehl caught up with the author in this interview where Zevin dishes about her sometimes unlikable protagonist, the status of her relationships with her high school boyfriends and the importance of reinventing yourself. To dive even deeper into this book, check out these discussion questions.

Another character looking to make a fresh start is V, the aloof “bad girl” in Carolyn Mackler’s GUYAHOLIC. After totally messing up her relationship with the only nice guy she’s ever dated, V sets out on a solo cross-country road trip. Despite the detours, thunderstorms and crazy people she meets along the way, V reaches her final destination, even though it’s far from where she planned to go. Mackler gave Teenreads.com the scoop on what made her decide to give V her own novel --- hint: Teenreads.com played a big part! --- and also told us about her own cross-country trek she took when she was 22. If you’ve ever messed up and thought there was no way to make things right, you should definitely check out this book. If you are a Carolyn Mackler fan and live in New York, please note that she will be appearing at Borders at Columbus Circle on Monday, October 15th at 6PM along with David Levithan and Rachel Cohn, authors of NAOMI AND ELY'S NO KISS LIST, and Megan McCafferty, author of FOURTH COMINGS.

At Teenreads.com, we love sharing interviews with authors so they can give you the story behind their work. This month we have three Author Talks that do just that. First we hear from Perry Moore, whose novel HERO follows the story of a gay adolescent superhero. Read an interview with Moore to find out how much of his own teenage experiences made it into the book and to get a behind-the-scenes view of his work on the Narnia movies. Another author we’re super excited about is Jenny Downham, whose debut novel BEFORE I DIE will make you reconsider your priorities --- and maybe come up with a “before I die” list of your own. Downham shares the twisty path she took writing her first book and her favorite library moment. Our third Author Talk is with Guillaume Prevost, who wrote the stay-up-late, can't-put-it-down page-turner THE BOOK OF TIME. Prevost is a history teacher, and in this interview he talks about how much he loves making the past come alive for his students. If his lectures are anything like his book, I'd love a front-row seat in his class!

Other books definitely worth a look are THE SPELL BOOK OF LISTEN TAYLOR (ever notice how a new perspective on a situation changes everything?) and BOUNCE (finally, a stepmother who isn't evil incarnate!). Looking for even more suggestions? We have tons in our Cool New Books and New in Paperback roundups.

Teenreads.com loves books, authors…and free stuff! This month we have two great giveaways. Fifty(!) lucky readers will win a copy of IDOL GIRLS: What's Your Obsession? by Hayley DiMarco. You can enter the contest here. Also, let us know what books you've been reading here and you’ll be eligible to win a copy of BEFORE I DIE. See your recommendations and find out what others have loved in our Word of Mouth section.

And when you need a break from the books, don’t miss “Gossip Girl,” the bestselling book series turned TV show that airs on Wednesday nights on The CW (check your local listings for the exact time). It has all the sizzle of “The OC” (may it rest in peace) with a sophisticated East Coast spin.

Here's to a great school year --- and time for pleasure reading between all those required titles! My niece keeps telling me that she takes a homework break to read the books that I send her for pleasure reading and feels like she got a nice escape even reading a chapter or two. I love that idea. My sons both make time for their own reading. Okay, I confess I will fall for them worming their way out of chores with the words, "But Mom, I am READING." I think that they see me reading so much for work that they think...hmmmm...that might work. And it usually does!

New Special Feature: MEMOIRS OF A TEENAGE AMNESIAC by Gabrielle Zevin

Gabrielle Zevin is the author of the critically-acclaimed teen novel ELSEWHERE, as well as a book geared toward adult readers, MARGARETTOWN. Her latest work of fiction, MEMOIRS OF A TEENAGE AMNESIAC, explores themes of self-discovery and second chances through the story of a young girl who loses her memory in an accident and must find a way to regain her bearings. In this interview with Teenreads.com's Norah Piehl, Zevin discusses the literary inspiration behind her book's protagonist, Naomi, describes the difficulties she encountered while creating this complex and flawed character, and even assembles a hypothetical iPod playlist in honor of Naomi's love "quadrilateral." She also explains her childhood fascination with typewriters, shares a cherished memory from her high school days, and reveals what she hopes readers will take away from this novel.

MEMOIRS OF A TEENAGE AMNESIAC by Gabrielle Zevin (Fiction)
If Naomi had picked tails, she would have won the coin toss. She wouldn’t have had to go back for the yearbook camera, and she wouldn’t have hit her head on the steps. She wouldn’t have woken up in an ambulance with amnesia. She certainly would have remembered her boyfriend, Ace. She might even have remembered why she fell in love with him in the first place. She would understand why her best friend, Will, keeps calling her “Chief.” She’d know about her mom’s new family. She’d know about her dad’s fiancée. She never would have met James, the boy with the questionable past and the even fuzzier future, who tells her he once wanted to kiss her. She wouldn’t have wanted to kiss him back. But Naomi picked heads.

Gabrielle Zevin has crafted an imaginative novel all about love and second chances.

Special Feature: GUYAHOLIC by Carolyn Mackler

Carolyn Mackler is the award-winning author of LOVE AND OTHER FOUR-LETTER WORDS, THE EARTH, MY BUTT, AND OTHER BIG ROUND THINGS and VEGAN VIRGIN VALENTINE. Her latest novel, GUYAHOLIC, centers on Vivienne Valentine, a secondary character from her previous work, and V's own misadventures through life, love and a cross-country road trip. In this interview with Teenreads.com's Norah Piehl, Mackler explains why she chose to explore V's story and sheds light on how the character's past affects present relationships. She also shares some of her favorite YA novels, offers advice for aspiring writers and describes a road trip she took when she was 22.

But in the spring of senior year, a fateful hockey puck lands her in the lap of Sam Almond. Right from the start, things with Sam are different. V is terrified to admit it, but this might be meaningful after all. On the afternoon of graduation, V receives some shocking news. Later, at a party, she makes an irreversible mistake and risks losing Sam forever. When her mom invites her to Texas, V embarks on a cross-country road trip with the hopes of putting two thousand miles between herself, Sam and the wreckage of that night.
