Hot Reads for Cold Weather
Earlier this month, the groundhog, our hopeful harbinger of spring, poked his head out and took a look around after a long winter's nap. As I began prematurely packing away my sweaters and thinking about sandy beaches (okay, maybe sandy beaches are a couple of seasons away, but a gal can daydream, right?), I was abruptly halted by the appearance of the weatherly rodent's shadow, forecasting six more weeks of winter (sigh). With the last few weeks being as cold as they've been, who could blame the groundhog for heading back to bed that fateful February 2nd? Are you feeling the same way? Luckily, I have a bunch of new books to hold us over until spring! One innovative book I am really excited about is Patrick Carman's latest work, SKELETON CREEK, the first installment of a new suspense series that tells its tale in two parts: Ryan shares his journals within the text of the book, while his filmmaker friend Sarah tells her side of the story through videos that readers can watch by visiting her website, www.skeletoncreekisreal.com. This interactive method of storytelling makes readers feel as though they are a part of the story, investigating the mysteries of Skeleton Creek right alongside both Ryan and Sarah. Check out a behind-the-scenes interview with the author, as well as an excerpt of this groundbreaking two-book series and our review. ENVY, the third installment in Anna Godbersen's Luxe series, delivers new romance, scandal and intrigue in the lavish Gilded Age New York. To learn more about the gossip girls of the 19th century, be sure to check out our review and an excerpt. A unique and inspiring tale, MARCELO IN THE REAL WORLD by Francisco X. Stork takes us on the poignant journey of a teen boy with an autistic disability as he transitions from a somewhat sheltered life to one in which he is forced to face the "real world." To browse through this standout novel, click here and look at our review. If you're still bummed about the groundhog's prediction, you can always read about other people's adventures in warm weather. In SAME DIFFERENCE, Emily decides to take art classes in the city in her quest for a new and exciting change this summer but is struggling to find her identity, caught between a suburb where everyone tries to fit in and a city where everyone wants to be unique. To get a head start on Siobhan Vivian's summer story, read a review and an excerpt, along with our interview. February marks the birthday of Abraham Lincoln (February 12th), whose presidential career was sadly cut short when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln scholar James Swanson recently published CHASING LINCOLN'S KILLER, a fast-paced thriller describing the Union's epic hunt to track down the man who killed one of the country's most revered presidents. Read a passage, check out our review, and watch a video where Swanson talks about the book. WICKED, the fifth entry in Sara Shepard's Pretty Little Liars series, has the girls from Rosewood High intertwined in bigger scandals and even darker secrets. Find out more about Sarah, the mastermind behind this addictive, bestselling series, in our author interview; then take a peek inside the book and check out our review! Also, I hope you didn't miss TALES FROM OUTER SUBURBIA, the imaginative collection of short stories and illustrations by New York Times bestselling author Shaun Tan. (Remember his amazing graphic novel, THE ARRIVAL?) And be sure to take a look at ABSOLUTELY MAYBE by Lisa Yee, as Maybelline (named after her pageant queen mother's favorite mascara), aka "Maybe," sets off on a trip to Cali with her two best friends in search of her father. Get the scoop behind the book in our interview with the author. You let your voices be heard and we are thrilled to announce the finalists for the Children's Book Council's 2009 Teen Choice Book Award. The five books that were chosen most frequently by our readers as their favorites of 2008 are AIRHEAD by Meg Cabot, BREAKING DAWN by Stephenie Meyer, THE HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins, LOCK AND KEY by Sarah Dessen and PAPER TOWNS by John Green. Many thanks to the over 2,200 of you who helped to pick this shortlist! Shortly we will let you know where you can go vote for these titles. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, May 12th during Children's Book Week. Congratulations to Teresa from Severn, MD for winning the Sarah Dessen "Lock and Key" contest! We are awarding her the complete Sarah Dessen library, including Dessen's most recent addition, LOCK AND KEY, along with a very cool "lock and key" necklace. Completing the collection are her books JUST LISTEN, THE TRUTH ABOUT FOREVER, THIS LULLABY, DREAMLAND, KEEPING THE MOON, SOMEONE LIKE YOU and THAT SUMMER. Dessen's upcoming title, ALONG FOR THE RIDE, debuts in June. Keep up with all the latest buzz on the new book at Teenreads.com and www.sarahdessen.com. Looking for the next contest? Enter the Claudia Ann Seaman Awards for Young Writers! Formerly the Claudia Ann Seaman Poetry Award, this contest is open to all high school students across the country. Each participant may submit a total of three poems, essays or stories on any subject, as long as their fiction and creative nonfiction submission does not exceed 2,500 words. Author Talk: Patrick Carman, Author of SKELETON CREEK
Children’s author Patrick Carman’s latest work, SKELETON CREEK, is the first installment of an innovative new series that tells its tale in two parts: Ryan, one of the main characters, shares his journals within the text of the book, while his friend Sarah --- an amateur filmmaker --- tells her side of the story through videos that readers can watch by visiting her website. In this interview, Carman and his editor, David Levithan, discuss what inspired this multimedia project and reveal the initial insecurities about taking on this new method of storytelling. Carman also shares some behind-the-scenes information about shooting the videos, explains why it’s so important to think outside the box as a way to encourage young readers, and talks about why he chose to end the book with a cliffhanger.
SKELETON CREEK by Patrick Carman (Mystery/Suspense) Strange things are happening in Skeleton Creek --- and Ryan and Sarah are trying to get to the heart of it. But after an eerie accident leaves Ryan housebound and forbidden to see Sarah, their investigation takes two tracks: Ryan records everything in his journal, while Sarah uses her videocam to search things out…and then email the clips for Ryan to see. In a new, groundbreaking format, Patrick Carman’s story is broken into two parts --- Ryan's text in the book, and Sarah's videos on a special website (www.skeletoncreekisreal.com), with links and passwords given throughout the book. New Special Feature: MARCELO IN THE REAL WORLD by Francisco X. Stork
MARCELO IN THE REAL WORLD by Francisco X. Stork (Fiction) Marcelo Sandoval hears music that nobody else can hear --- part of an autism-like condition that no doctor has been able to identify. But his father has never fully believed in the music or Marcelo’s differences, and he challenges Marcelo to work in the mailroom of his law firm for the summer…to join the “real world.” There Marcelo meets Jasmine, his beautiful and surprising co-worker, and Wendell, the son of another partner in the firm. He learns about competition and jealousy, anger and desire. But it’s a picture he finds in a file --- a picture of a girl with half a face --- that truly connects him with the real world: its suffering, its injustice and what he can do to fight. Reminiscent of THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME in the intensity and purity of its voice, this extraordinary novel is a love story, legal drama and a celebration of the music each of us hears inside.

Special Feature: CHASING LINCOLN'S KILLER by James Swanson

What happened in Washington, D.C., that spring, and in the swamps and rivers, forests and fields of Maryland and Virginia during the next twelve days, is far too incredible to have been made up.”
