Christy Miller’s best friend Katie always seems to be dragging her into crazy schemes. First, she persuades Christy to go on a disastrous ski trip, and now, in SEVENTEEN WISHES, the ninth installment in Robin Jones Gunn’s Christy Miller series, she manages to talk Christy into becoming a summer camp counselor. At least Christy is looking forward to the time they will get to spend together --- until Katie’s family refuses to let her go.

Now Christy is all alone with a group of rambunctious young girls --- certainly not the way she had envisioned spending her summer, especially with Todd having just returned from Hawaii. Her fantasy of leading a group of sweet, well-behaved girls quickly begins to fade as she meets her summer companions. Not only are they unruly, but many of them begin to reveal that they have much more serious problems, and Christy is not sure if she’s ready --- or even able --- to help them.

When they are not wreaking havoc, Christy’s campers are busy meddling in her life. The attention of super-cute counselor Jaeson has not escaped their notice, and the girls are determined to set Christy up with the perfect summer fling. When she’s forced to tell them that she doesn’t really have a boyfriend, the campers go into overdrive attempting to unite this seemingly well-matched couple. While she feels embarrassed initially, and is still quite loyal to Todd, Christy begins to enjoy the extra attention. With moonlit picnics and boat rides, Christy is happy to finally experience the romantic side of a relationship that she never got from Todd.

But maybe it really is too good to be true. Christy starts to wonder if perhaps it is all a dream, or even just a game he’s playing with her. And, of course, Christy still must fulfill her duties as a counselor, which she discovers is a much more serious role than she once imagined. Will Christy realize this in time to make an impact? And will she ever wake up from her dreamy romance?

SEVENTEEN WISHES is a nice interlude in the Christy Miller series. While the book does not advance Christy’s story much, it does introduce an entire cast of new and interesting characters. The story takes place apart from the regular cast and familiar settings of previous books, which many readers may find refreshing. Gunn discusses some significant issues, from the importance of being a role model, to the dangers of getting caught up in a new romance. Christy Miller fans will not be disappointed and will be ready to get back to the usual ongoing drama in Christy’s life.
