Sierra Jensen used to think she would never find a boyfriend. Now her problem is quite the opposite --- she has too many! In WITHOUT A DOUBT, the fifth book in Robin Jones Gunn’s Sierra Jensen series, the title character and her best friend Amy eagerly plan their first big double date with Randy and Drake. Sierra is still not so sure she wants to be more than friends with Randy, but after much encouragement from her family and friends, she decides to go along with the plan.
Things immediately start to go awry, as Amy’s longtime crush Drake seems to have no interest in her but plenty in Sierra! When Drake asks Sierra out, she is both stunned and confused. Having the attention of a cute, popular guy like Drake is pretty flattering, but is it worth hurting Amy? And what will it do to her friendship with Randy?
After a series of mix-ups, Amy learns that Drake wants to ask Sierra out. While she is furious initially, she finally concedes that Sierra would be crazy not to take him up on his offer. Amy has actually moved on herself, desperately trying to get the attention of Sierra’s much older brother Wesley. Then, Drake not only asks Sierra out on a date but also to be his girlfriend. Totally infatuated with handsome, charming Drake, Sierra accepts his offer and has her first real boyfriend. Drake makes her feel different than any other guy ever has, but is this a good thing?
Things only get more complicated as Sierra, Randy, Drake, Wesley and Amy go on a backpacking trip together, where feelings are revealed and tensions finally reach a breaking point. Will Amy and Sierra ever be able to truly mend their friendship? Did Randy ever think of Sierra as more than a friend? Can they even be friends again? And is Drake really as wonderful as he seems?
WITHOUT A DOUBT starts a new chapter in Sierra Jensen’s life. Readers may be refreshed to see a change from the long, drawn-out story of Sierra and Paul. With Paul off in Scotland, Sierra is finally able to stop obsessing over him and begin to develop relationships with new characters. The book deals with complicated relationships, both romances and friendships, to which young readers will surely relate. It also offers some good advice about finding a balance between the two. With Sierra’s always-dramatic love life left up in the air, there is much to anticipate in the series’ upcoming installments.
