After Sierra Jensen’s father decides to have a talk about purity with her, she begins to consider more carefully her choices in dating. In WITH THIS RING, the sixth book in Robin Jones Gunn’s Sierra Jensen series, Sierra’s suddenly complicated love life has been stressing her out. However, she can’t wait to get away from it all and go to California to see old friends Tracy and Doug get married. Unfortunately, Sierra is unable to relax as best friend Amy reveals that she has been making some choices that potentially could be destructive.
When she gets to California, Sierra is excited to get to spend some time with older sister Tawni and her boyfriend Jeremy, who is (conveniently) longtime love interest Paul’s brother. Most of all, Sierra can’t wait to be back with the friends she made on her missions trip to England, especially Christy Miller.
When she finally has a chance to talk to Christy, Sierra learns that her old friend has to make some very difficult choices. Christy has been offered the chance of a lifetime --- a scholarship to attend college in Switzerland --- but is unsure if she will be able to leave the comfort of home or, even more importantly, her boyfriend Todd. As Christy tries to make a decision, chaos ensues during the wedding weekend. A bachelor party prank gone too far leads to a trip to the emergency room, and Christy’s Aunt Marti attempts to create as much drama of her own as possible. All of these events make Sierra consider what she really wants in her future relationships, as well as evaluate whether she is even ready to be romantically involved with anyone. While Sierra may be able to make the right choices, can her friends do the same?
WITH THIS RING does not really seem to be a Sierra Jensen title, but more of a continuation of Gunn’s previous Christy Miller series. While the book does show a few important developments in Sierra’s life, Christy and her friends are the real stars of the story. It seems as though Gunn is using Sierra’s perspective to keep writing about old characters. Those who have not read the Christy Miller series may find the book to be somewhat dull and hard to follow, while Christy Miller enthusiasts will delight in getting to see what has been going on in her life. Although WITH THIS RING is an enjoyable read, fans undoubtedly will be ready to return to Sierra Jensen’s story in upcoming installments.
