He was looking forward to the summer of his life. John was headed to rodeo camp for five days --- that meant five days away from his family, his cares, and his everyday life. No more girlfriends, bullies, or chores. It was just John, the bull, and the rest of the guys at camp. With Bobby, his best friend, by his side, things were sure to be amazing. He knew he would have an awesome time, but he didn't know that he would experience things he would never forget for the rest of his life.

Upon arriving at camp, John made friends quickly. Things were going smoothly, but after finding out that Kit, his roommate, was gay, things went awry. Should he remain friends with Kit? Should he be worried that Kit would "hit on" him? John is torn between being friends with Kit and protecting his image. John feels comfortable with Kit, like he can confide anything in him. Other characters, however, do not feel comfortable with Kit. Does John really care what others think of his relationship with Kit? Most importantly, is John himself gay?

For an issue that is so controversial, Jean Ferris deals with homosexuality very well. Many teens haven't had an experience like John's, and some don't know the seriousness of the matter. EIGHT SECONDS will show those who read it that homosexuality is an important part of today's society. This novel is enlightening because of its message. It is also well written and suspenseful. What will happen to John during his eight seconds on the bull? After I finished the book, I found I knew much more about those eight seconds and rodeos than I did when I began. This novel is sure to please.
