Love in the Time of Global Warming

Francesca Lia Block is the imaginative bestselling author of WEETZIE BAT; she brings a radiant, illuminating world of death, destruction and adventure in her novel LOVE IN THE TIME OF GLOBAL WARMING. Block’s writing sweeps you up in a whirlwind of emotions and vibrant colors; and entices all of your five senses.

"Block will make you see, smell, hear, taste and feel Pen’s story, and she will surely wisp you away into an inspiring, fantastical, Dali-esque dream world that you with never forget."

Pen was an ordinary teenage girl who did ordinary teenage things; she would hang out with her friends Moira and Noey, tease and torment her younger brother Venice, play with her loyal dog Argos and get into arguments with her mother here and there --- until the Earth Shaker came. A hole burned through the ozone layer and the world turned upside down, and one day a tidal wave broke right through the perfect pink house in which Pen grew up. Now Pen is alone, and she has to fend for herself in a world that is swallowed whole by the giants that rule the earth.

Canned goods are the only form of food, the plants are dead, and all animals and humans are diminishing. Pen believes her family and her dog is still alive somewhere, and she is determined to find them. She learns to follow the orange butterflies that appear along her path; they lead her to meet Hex, Ez and Ash, and she learns that they all have something in common, something that will defeat the evil giants that roam the land and feed off human flesh. But she has to sacrifice something of her own in order to put the world back on track.

Block uses a lot of imagery based on famous paintings and artists throughout history. She paints beautiful pictures with her words, and blends her story within the prose of Homer’s THE ODDESSY. Block will make you see, smell, hear, taste and feel Pen’s story, and she will surely wisp you away into an inspiring, fantastical, Dali-esque dream world that you with never forget.
