Midnight Jewel

Review

Midnight Jewel

Richelle Mead is the bestselling author of over 25 novels for adults and teens. A fan of myth and folklore, she has written many books including those elements. Richelle is the author of theVampire Academy series as well as its spin-off series, Bloodlines. She recently released SOUNDLESS, a standalone novel set around Chinese mythology. Her newest teen trilogy, The Glittering Court, began with a book by that same name. The second novel in the trilogy, MIDNIGHT JEWEL, occurs at the same time as THE GLITTERING COURT but from an alternate point of view.

"The plot of MIDNIGHT JEWEL was full of twists and turns. This novel was much faster paced than THE GLITTERING COURT, and I saw that as an improvement. Richelle Mead’s extensive writing capabilities have amazed me."

MIDNIGHT JEWEL is the story of Adelaide’s friend Mira, a Sirminican refugee living in Osfrid, who is recruited for the Glittering Court by Cedric Thorn. The Glittering Court takes poor young women from Osfrid, teaches them how to be proper ladies, and brings them to the New World (Adoria) for arranged marriages with elite men. Mira’s motivation for joining the Glittering Court is more to help her brother than to find a wealthy husband. She faces many prejudices being Sirminican and ends up finding a unique path in Adoria.

I loved the idea of Adelaide’s friends, Mira and Tamsin, getting books to tell their stories. In THE GLITTERING COURT, the reader had little to no idea about what the other girls were doing. Mira’s story ended up being a thrilling tale that was entirely different from Adelaide’s. I loved how everything that happened in the first book made much more sense when reading the second book. There are some things you will only pick up on if you have read both books, but MIDNIGHT JEWEL can also be a fantastic standalone novel.

Mira was an entertaining character to read about because she did not take no for an answer. She did whatever she wanted, and she was an inherently good person. Mira was not afraid to do whatever she thought was right and that meant she did not always do things legally. Mira encountered a lot of characters who I adored, including her love interest. Grant, Silas, Aiana and Elijah were some of my favorite characters because they all cared about Mira and always helped her out when she needed it. The setting of the trilogy is an engrossing one, and I enjoy reading about a different universe that parallels ours so well.

The plot of MIDNIGHT JEWEL was full of twists and turns. This novel was much faster paced than THE GLITTERING COURT, and I saw that as an improvement. Richelle Mead’s extensive writing capabilities have amazed me. I loved Mira even more than I loved Adelaide, and I see so much potential for the final book in this trilogy to be amazing. Tamsin has become a mystery that I am curious to read about. I will definitely be picking up the last book in this trilogy as soon as it is released.

I highly recommend this series. An extraordinary thing about it is that you can read the books in any order. I read them in release order and thought it worked out well, but you can read them in any order you choose. MIDNIGHT JEWEL is for those who want an action-packed plot, an intriguing world and a main character who should not be underestimated.
