"NOW I RISE by Kiersten White was an amazing follow-up...One of my favorite things about this series is the characters....The way the Kiersten White is able to portray the tension...was fantastic."

NOW I RISE by Kiersten White was an amazing follow-up to her first book, AND I DARKEN. The first book consisted of a lot of set-up for the characters, time period and social norms, but this book had a lot more plot to it. That said, I did find this book to be a little less interesting than the first book. The first hundred pages were a little slow, and it was really just explaining what had happened between the first book and the second. After that, the book really started to pick up because we started to see the tension between Lada and Radu that had developed in the first book. Their love-hate relationship was what really kept the book interesting and suspenseful.

One of my favorite things about this series is the characters because they are so original for the time period. Lada is the powerful warrior while Radu is the strategist which is the basis for many of the obstacles in the book, but it is also what makes it so interesting. Their sibling relationship is the basis of the story, with a little bit of romance on the side to add more conflict. The way the Kiersten White is able to portray the tension --- as well as the love that lays underneath it --- was fantastic. I really began to feel the pain of both Radu and Lada as the perspective kept changing, and once Radu calls for Lada's help and they meet the book really started to pick up.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, although not as much as the first. It was a very good sequel and Kiersten White has continued on her streaks of amazing young adult novels. I can't wait to read more of this story because not only do I love stories centered on sibling relationships but the suspense never stops with this series. I would definitely recommend continuing on with this saga if you enjoyed the first historical novel.
