Prophecy (The Dragon King Chronicles)

Before the time of man, the Heavenly Father and the Demon Lord battled for possession of the earth. The Heavenly Father succeeded in banishing the Demon Lord to the underworld, but that wasn’t the end. The great Dragon King of the seven kingdoms foretold a time when the Demon Lord would return stronger than ever before and threaten to wipe out mankind. The Dragon King’s prophecy stated that “Seven will become three. Three will become one. One will save us all.” However, it is unclear who will be "the one."

"Author Ellen Oh has created an intriguing start to a promising series. She nicely weaves in cultural tidbits that add depth to what could have been a run-of-the-mill fantasy story."

Kira has much more important things to think about than an ancient prophecy. She has her hands full with other matters. Kira happens to be the only woman warrior in her uncle’s, the king’s, guard due to the fact that she is a demon hunter. She has a special ability to see and fight demons. In a land riddled with demons, you would think this skill would come in handy, but Kira is an outcast in society. Her yellow eyes set her apart and strike fear in many that look at her. Kira has long gotten used to the fact that she’s different, but that doesn’t make it any easier protecting the king and the crown prince.

When news comes in from several of the southern kingdoms that kings have been murdered and rumors of the return of the Demon Lord are running rampant, Kira doesn’t hesitate. She takes the crown prince and makes for the North. After successfully evading hoards of troops who also happen to be looking for the prince (although not without some skirmishes), Kira’s small party eventually finds its way to a hidden monastery where some monks who have been studying the ancient prophecy have some new information. In order for the Demon Lord to be stopped, the heir to the Dragon King must find some particular hidden treasures that yield great power.

Now Kira must accomplish two impossible tasks. She must help her cousin, the crown prince, find these lost treasures and help him fulfill the prophecy to unite the seven kingdoms. At the same time, however, she must return to her kingdom to overthrow the resurgence of the Demon Lord and reclaim her homeland. She’s felt her whole life that her uniqueness has been leading her to something important, but what is she supposed to do?

Author Ellen Oh has created an intriguing start to a promising series. She nicely weaves in cultural tidbits that add depth to what could have been a run-of-the-mill fantasy story. Kira is a noteworthy addition to the growing number of strong female leads that are becoming commonplace in young adult literature, and the fact that she is an outcast only makes her more endearing. The addition of the demons, the Dragon King prophecy, and a twist at the end will leave you clamoring for the next book.
