Reached: Matched Trilogy, Book Three

In REACHED, the final installment of the Matched trilogy, Cassia must fight to save Ky while she struggles to decide what and who she believes in.

Cassia, Ky and Xander narrate alternating chapters in the book, describing their contribution to the Rising --- the rebellion against the Society. A mysterious Plague starts infecting large portions of the population, and when the Society begins to lose its grip on the populace, the Rising swoops in a (mostly) peaceful takeover and begins to administer its Cure. But a new strain of the disease pops up --- one on which the Rising’s cure does not work, and the Rising struggles to maintain control of the Society.

"Condie’s focus on relationships, the different ways to love and the ultimate realization that society is filled with shades of gray make REACHED a satisfying conclusion to the Matched trilogy."

The Pilot, the leader of the Rising, believes that Cassia, Xander and Ky are part of a plot to undermine the Rising and takes them to the mysterious Stone Villages outside of the society, to work with the villagers who live there --- those who reject both the Society and the Rising --- on a cure. The stakes grow increasingly high as Ky is infected with the new strain of the Plague, and his symptoms worsen. Xander, with his skills as a medic, and Cassia, with her skills as a Sorter, race towards finding a new cure before it is too late for Ky. As they work, they learn that the Society and the Rising are not as different as they once thought, and they ultimately must choose what is more important --- security or freedom to choose.

Condie’s descriptions are evocative, and she continues to develop the main characters in the series. Readers who have followed Cassia, Ky and Xander through the triology will notice their growth. Cassia and Xander’s struggles with what to believe in, and what is most important to them, will resonate with readers. It would be easy for Condie to let Cassia’s family, and Ky’s adoptive parents, fade out of the picture and focus only on the love triangle between Cassia, Ky and Xander. The fact that she does not, and that Cassia and Ky continue to struggle with the tension between their love of their families and desire to escape the Society, moves the plot in interesting directions. Condie’s focus on relationships, the different ways to love and the ultimate realization that society is filled with shades of gray make REACHED a satisfying conclusion to the Matched trilogy.
