In a town like Kendall, New Jersey, where football is life, high school quarterback Jerry Downing finds himself in the spotlight quite often. But ever since the accident last year, he’s been careful not to let it get to his head. Jerry has first-hand experience to how a reputation --- and a high school football career --- can be ruined by a single decision. But this year is a new year, a new season and Jerry’s here to set things right for his town and his family.
"SECOND IMPACT, told in the blog posts and emails between Carla Jenson and Jerry Downing, wonderfully portrays the dangers of one of America’s top sports."
Carla Jenson, a girl who speaks the truth with no thought to the repercussions they might have, is the lead reporter for the school’s sports section. She’s just recruited Jerry Downing, quarterback for the Kendall Tigers, to co-author a blog with her, giving two perspectives to this year’s football season. But then, at one of the games, Jerry’s friend takes a hard hit and receives a concussion.
Carla, ever the reporter, begins following the story, interviewing professionals and asking the big question: When is it too soon to let an injured player back into the game? But in a small town like Kendall, where football keeps people's spirits high, questions like these can get a reporter in trouble. With a big game in sight, does the health of a player mean anything to the people in Kendall, who want nothing more than to win?
SECOND IMPACT, told in the blog posts and emails between Carla Jenson and Jerry Downing, wonderfully portrays the dangers of one of America’s top sports. By giving two perspectives to the story, David and Perri Klass show the opinions of someone attached to the game and a spectator who, although she supports the game, is able to see the truth underneath the helmet. This story also brings to light an important issue in one of America’s most beloved sports. Players are getting injured everyday, and although their injuries may heal, the long term effects are much more serious.
The characters in SECOND IMPACT, though very different, are both determined to do what is right. They both make mistakes in this book, and they both struggle to find ways to redeem themselves. Overall, SECOND IMPACT tells the story of a boy who is pressured to throw the perfect pass and a girl who just wants to tell the truth.
