Six of Crows

If every YA writer is attempting to make his or her fantasy novel a caper full of intrigue, then Leigh Bardugo shines like a diamond amidst a handful of pebbles. Her latest book, SIX OF CROWS, kicks off a new chapter in her Grisha universe, but serves as a stellar standalone in its own right. Pitched as Ocean’s Eleven meets GAME OF THRONES, SIX OF CROWS manages to break free of both of those molds to bust out a territory all its own.

In the city of Ketterdam, master thief Kaz Brekker masterminds the premier criminal crew in the urban slums. As ruthless with his tongue as he is with his fists, Kaz is a prime antihero that readers will love to hate. He has a heart, but it’s buried somewhere within his old-before-his-time, 17-year-old chest. The only person who can get through to him is the Wraith, the spy Inej, who serves as a valuable counterpoint to Kaz’s bravado-laden antics.

Leigh Bardugo shines like a diamond amidst a handful of pebbles. . . .[and] delivers a book that should fly off the shelves.

As Kaz wrangles his gang’s affairs, magical trouble looms on the horizon. The wizardly Grisha, who serve as indentured servants in Ketterdam, are being drugged with a new substance that offers them superhuman powers. When a merchant offers Kaz and his crew the con of a lifetime --- to break the drug’s creator out of the world’s most secure prison --- Kaz and his Crows can’t resist the challenge.

SIX OF CROWS contains just about every element that makes a rollicking fantasy novel work. Romance? Sometimes unnecessary, but check. Action and adventure? Check and check. Danger? In spades! A mission that matters? Check. And characters people will love, hate and care for? Check! Bardugo delivers a book that should fly off the shelves, regardless of where it’s shelved. Readers will be tapping their toes, eagerly awaiting the next volume in the series to grace bookstores.
