The Brokenhearted

Review

The Brokenhearted

Anthem Fleet appears to have everything: doting parents, a handsome boyfriend, a promising future as a ballerina and a large inheritance. But looks can be deceiving. Underneath the façade, Anthem’s parents are still ravaged by the death of Anthem’s older sister, her boyfriend is requesting more than she’s willing to give, and Anthem’s large inheritance makes her a walking bank --- and a perfect target.

"Full of complex characters, an intriguing world and intense action, this novel will pull the reader in from the first page."

Then Anthem meets Gavin, a mysterious boy in a club, and she begins breaking down the barriers that confine her. Anthem soon finds herself sneaking over to the South Side, far from her safe, protected home, to see him. But one fateful night, everything is taken from Anthem, including her life. Yet despite falling to her death, Anthem lives, but with a different heart ticking in her chest. Along with this new bionic heart, Anthem finds that she has new abilities, abilities that make her a force to be reckoned with. Filled with pain and grief, Anthem sets out to get revenge on the criminals that ruined her life.

THE BROKENHEARTED is an intriguing story about finding the strength to stand up for what is right. This novel is set in Bedlam City, a town divided into two sides: Bedlam, full of rich, pompous people; and the South Side, full of Syndicate criminals. Anthem, the protagonist, lives in the former side. Her parents own the Fleet Tower, and as a result, they are very rich. Due to this, Anthem is kept sheltered for most of her life. Therefore, it’s a shock for her to meet Gavin and go to the South Side.

The South Side changes Anthem drastically. In the beginning of the novel, Anthem sees good and bad as black and white. After her time in the South Side, Anthem sees that there is a blurred line between them, and sometimes it must be crossed. Additionally, in the beginning of THE BROKENHEARTED, Anthem is incredibly naïve. By the end of the story, Anthem knows the harsh truth of her world. She also knows that she has the power to change this world, and the lives of the people in it, for better. But Anthem is reluctant to become the superhero Bedlam needs.

THE BROKENHEARTED has been promoted as “The Dark Knight meets CINDER” and it’s easy to see why. Full of complex characters, an intriguing world and intense action, this novel will pull the reader in from the first page.
