The Epic Crush of Genie Lo

From debut young adult author F.C. Yee comes THE EPIC CRUSH OF GENIE LO, the first book in a new enthralling magical realism series.

Genie Lo is your typical Ivy-hopeful overachiever. Her entire life has been spent dedicated to becoming the perfect college applicant. However, days spent studying for the SAT, crushing it at volleyball and volunteering at the library have not prepared her for when her sleepy Bay Area suburb comes under attack by mythical demons from old Chinese folk tales. It also doesn’t help when the mysterious --- and possibly magical --- transfer kid, Quentin Sun, appoints himself as Genie’s new tutor on how to kill demons.

Suddenly, Genie’s small, grade-obsessed world is interrupted. With the fate of her friends, her family and the entire Bay Area in her hands, she has to learn how to summon her inner power --- which, according to Quentin, is strong enough to destroy the very gates of Heaven --- and crush all of her enemies.

"With its gripping storyline, surprisingly relatable characters and thrilling action-packed battles, this priceless novel will not let readers down. Mesmerizingly addictive...."

Only one word can describe this novel: hilarious! I don't think I have ever laughed so hard while reading a book, and I can’t even explain how humorous it was to follow all of Genie and Quentin’s antics. The complicated relationship between these two main characters was absolutely adorable to follow, and their interactions with everyone around them were beyond amusing. At times, I thought that this novel could have been straight out of an anime as it had the exact same humor and charm to it. The main storyline followed throughout the novel is super entertaining, and Yee incorporates parts of an old Chinese tale into the story, which I found really cool.

The most shocking thing about this book to me was how relatable and personal it felt. As a fellow tall Chinese girl applying to college, I don’t think I have ever related and connected to a character as much as I did to Genie. The diversity and representation in this novel was amazing. Yee’s references to various things from Chinese and Asian cultures, such as bubble tea and dim sum, made me smile so much as it is rare to see the little things represented. Also, I really appreciated how Yee was able to accurately portray the crazy, competitive world of college admissions as there are many YA books out there that include so much misinformation about the process. I loved actually reading about a character who has gone through the same exact struggles with the application process that I have had myself.

Not only is Genie a relatable character, but she is also an extraordinarily spunky, strong and serious person, who kicks so much butt. The fight scenes throughout this novel were beyond entertaining and vivid, and Yee’s writing was absolutely compelling. I’m not usually big on fight scenes, but I loved the ones within this novel as Yee’s writing was to the point, and he didn’t drag them out any longer than they needed to be.

With its gripping storyline, surprisingly relatable characters and thrilling action-packed battles, this priceless novel will not let readers down. Mesmerizingly addictive, THE EPIC CRUSH OF GENIE LO is perfect for readers looking for the perfect back to school read as well as those searching for a novel that will have them laughing the entire time.
