The Heartbreakers (The Heartbreak Chronicles)

Review

The Heartbreakers (The Heartbreak Chronicles)

At first glance, HEARTBREAKERS seems like the most cliché book ever: a girl meets a famous guy that she dislikes but then, gradually, falls for him. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the complexity of the plot and characters, as well as the unique writing techniques Novak used in this book.

I appreciated the varied dynamics between each of the characters; Stella has different relationships with her sister, her brother, her parents and Oliver, and each reveals something new about her personality. We can see her fierce protectiveness for those she loves from her relationship with her sister and her difficulty believing she is someone worth loving in her relationship with Oliver. Stella’s relationship with Oliver’s bandmates shows her easygoing and confident side, and the way that she and her brother look out for one another adds some sweetness to both of their personalities.

This is a great read that will have you eager to turn the pages until the very end.

I found the pacing of HEARTBREAKERS to be interesting and unique. Not even a small part of the book felt rushed; it all flowed smoothly and there weren’t any sudden events that left you wondering just how they could have happened. Nothing in the book gave me a clue as to how the story would end --- I had to wait until the last few pages for the biggest question of HEARTBREAKERS to be answered.

Although we’ve seen the storyline of HEARTBREAKERS before, Novak put her own spin on it by using unique techniques throughout the novel. This is a great read that will have you eager to turn the pages until the very end.

--SPOILER SECTION--

I swear, if Oliver and Stella had not ended up together at the end, I would have thrown a fit. I am someone who loves love stories that rip your heart out but then mend it at the end. I enjoy books that have complex situations but end with everyone being happy. HEARTBREAKERS was the perfect book to fit that bill. Throughout the book, you experience heartbreak --- with Cara’s cancer and the misunderstanding between Oliver and Stella --- but everything ends up right, in a way that is realistic. Cara is able to fight her cancer and Oliver and Stella are together and everyone lives happily ever after --- just the way they should.
