The Secret Sisterhood of Heartbreakers

Lucy spends her first morning of her sophomore year crying in the ladies room. After she had waited three months for her boyfriend, Alex, to return from summer camp, the first thing he did when he got off the school bus was break up with her. In the bathroom, an intriguing girl comforts her with a strange silk handkerchief and invites her to come learn how to get him back and even break hearts herself. Her tears cause ink to show up on the cloth with a time and location.

"Lynn Weingarten, author of WHEREVER NINA LIES, has written another mind-bending story with a relatable heroine."

Too interested to resist, Lucy goes and meets Olivia, Liza and Gil, three older, beautiful girls she had noticed around school. They invite her to become one of the Heartbreakers to heal her own heart, but to do so, she’ll have to collect the tear of a heartbroken boy in the next seven days. Then, she spies a cool guy from school throw himself down in front of one of the girls, begging her to take him back. Stunned, she races back to her best friend Tristan, who drove her to the Heartbreakers’ meeting place.

As the days pass, Lucy tries to get Alex back, but he only seems more annoyed with her. So she decides to try again with the three girls and their spells. She learns that Olivia has a family history with heartbreakers, Liza has reasons for always being surly, and Gil hides secrets under her friendly façade. Lucy spends more time with them, meeting the many boys and men who are enthralled with the three friends and would do anything for them. They introduce her to Colin, a funny and nice boy who falls for her right away. Lucy awkwardly tries to flirt and do what the girls request on her journey to becoming a heartbreaker. They raise the bar and ask her to perform increasingly difficult tasks, forcing Lucy to face her biggest fears. They make her over inside and out, helping her call up a confidence that she had buried while loving Alex. She is even thrown out to perform a song in front of a huge crowd with very surprising results.

The more she accomplishes, the more Lucy realizes that her infatuation with Alex was without depth. She vows never again to lose herself in her quest for love as she begins to enjoy the attention from other guys. But she does not think she can break someone else’s heart to increase her own power. She grows increasingly dependent on the magic and spells of the three friends, though it never seems to work in the way she thought it would. Even her friendship with Tristan begins to change.

Lucy learns not to trust anything as reality in the swirling magic and emotions. As time runs out, the final choices of this cast lead to surprising results. Despite the paranormal elements, this narrative evolves into a romantic and surprisingly realistic drama. Lynn Weingarten, author of WHEREVER NINA LIES, has written another mind-bending story with a relatable heroine.
