These Broken Stars

Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner are able to create an unforgettable, completely original romance with their newest book, THESE BROKEN STARS, the first in a trilogy about two polar-opposite teenagers forced to work together in order to survive.

Lilac LaRoux’s father is the most important man in the galaxy. Tarver is a nobody who has just gained fame for being a war hero. The two of them would have never met, but fate brings them together when the Icarus, the huge space liner both are sailing on, is yanked out of hyperspace and brought down to the nearest planet. Nobody survives --- except Lilac and Tarver. Despite their differences, the two quickly learn that they must survive together until help arrives --- assuming, of course, it will. Forced to make a grueling journey across an unknown planet that houses mysteries and hidden dangers, Lilac and Tarver come to look past their differences and find strength in each other’s company.

Lilac is one of the most dynamic characters I’ve ever seen --- she goes through such a complete character change, and I was so proud of her by the end of the book.

I thought that THESE BROKEN STARS was a wonderful science-fiction survival story. There are some similarities between the plot and the tale of the Titanic, but this is so much more. With a whole new planet to explore and some pretty eerie phenomena occurring, Lilac and Tarver are faced with endless possibilities to their tale. Both characters took a little time to warm up to each other, but when they do --- oh boy, do they. Lilac is one of the most dynamic characters I’ve ever seen --- she goes through such a complete character change, and I was so proud of her by the end of the book. Tarver, on the other hand, doesn’t change as much, but he is so selfless and snarky that you can’t help but love him. I loved how the story was told through both Lilac’s and Tarver’s perspectives, and an ongoing interview between Tarver and an interrogator helps you fit the puzzle pieces of the tale together.

Anybody wanting to become immersed in a spellbinding story should read THESE BROKEN STARS. With an intense and fast-paced plot, it is sure to hook even the most reluctant reader. THESE BROKEN STARS is a story about love, adventure, triumph and finding your true self in a place where you would least expect to.
