Review

This Is W.A.R.

Willa Ames-Rowan was the sweetheart of Hawthorne Lake Country Club. Everyone loved the kind, pretty and funny girl who, despite her popularity, was nicer than the typical rich kids at the club. Unfortunately, few people are willing to stand up for Willa after she never returns from a boat ride with James Gregory, heir of the country club. The powerful Gregory family quickly shuts down the investigation with some well placed bribes, but everyone at the club knows who killed Willa Ames-Rowan.

"THIS IS W.A.R. was an exciting read with perfect proportions of dark secrets and light humor."

Since nobody at Hawthorne Lake is willing to stand up to the notorious Gregory family, four girls decide to get justice for Willa in their own way. Madge, Lina, Sloane and Rose forge a pact to bring down the Gregory family and avenge Willa’s death. Unfortunately, the road to revenge isn’t an easy one, especially when dealing with such prominent opponents. When their first few plots don’t pan out, the girls’ schemes become more and more elaborate, as well as increasingly dangerous. As their desperation grows, secrets begin to surface. It turns out that each girl was on the yacht the night Willa died, and each has a secret they’ll do anything to hide. To piece together the story of what really happened, the girls are forced to open up and combine their accounts. The results shatter the girls’ illusion that Willa’s murder is a black and white matter and produce lots of new questions. Are they sure without a doubt that James Gregory killed Willa? Is Madge taking the war against the Gregory family too seriously? How many other girls have been hurt by the Gregorys? Read the book to find out the answers!

THIS IS W.A.R. was an exciting read with perfect proportions of dark secrets and light humor. I had a little bit of a hard time getting attached to the characters, a problem that may have arisen because the book was split into four sections, each with a different narrator. I liked that the all of the girls had a distinct personality, but I didn’t really connect with any of them.

On the other hand, I did enjoy the mystery, suspense and surprises in the novel. THIS IS W.A.R. isn’t a horror story, but it reminded me of one in some ways. It provided the same thrills you feel while watching a scary movie and definitely had a dark side. I also liked the challenge of trying to figure out what really happened the night Willa died based on the murky accounts of various characters.

THIS IS W.A.R. is certainly worth a read. It would appeal to anyone who enjoys mysteries, books with secrets and lies or romances. If you fancy the idea of going to an extreme to help a person you care about, then THIS IS W.A.R. is definitely for you! Take a break from balmy beach romances and give this mystery a try!
