Valentine’s Series: The Nicest Guys You Will Ever Meet in a Book

To celebrate Valentine's Day, some of our Teen Board members wrote blog posts to celebrate all things book crushes, romance novels and awesome fictional dates. Below, Bryn D. writes an ode to nice guys and YA. Read below and see if you have the same taste!

We all know the stereotypical fictional jock who doesn’t notice the girl until she loses 10 pounds or takes off her glasses. We all know the stereotypical brooding, smolderingly handsome and somewhat emotionally abusive fictional guy, who usually turns out to be a vampire or a guy with just a really bad childhood. And we all know the stereotypical fictional guy who is a jerk to our wonderful heroine --- who might have some judgement issues --- throughout the entire novel or series, but says one kinda nice thing that one time and gets the girl. I don’t know about you, but I am sick of these fictional men. Stereotypes in general are usually never a good way to go. But there is one stereotypical fictional guy who --- no matter how hard I try --- I can’t seem to stop adoring with all of my weak and lonely heart: the “nice guy.”

Usually, the nice guy is in love with our oblivious heroine. I mean, she can take out a demon with one punch and jump 1000 feet in the air, but she can’t seem to see that her best guy friend smiles at her a little wider than a casual friend would. I would like to say, also, that I cannot get enough of these female heroines. They help me to believe that somewhere some guy might be pining over me, and I might just be too busy saving the world or maybe just doing biology homework to notice. I cannot get enough of these ladies, nor cannot I get enough of their best “friends.”

Stereotypes in general are usually never a good way to go. But there is one stereotypical fictional guy who --- no matter how hard I try --- I can’t seem to stop adoring with all of my weak and lonely heart: the “nice guy.”

Some wonderful examples of nice guys are Simon Lewis from The Mortal Instruments series, Jem Carstairs from The Infernal Devices series, Ron Weasley from the Harry Potter series and every John Green male protagonist ever. I love all of these men with fervent passion. They are adorable, polite and always have a great joke on hand. And it always --- in some way or another --- works out for them. Simon got Izzy, Jem got Tessa Ron got Hermione, and...well, 1 out of 3 of John Green’s male protagonists got a happy ending.

These men are all happy, carefree and they usually don’t have the fate of the supernatural world resting on their shoulders. All they want is to make our female protagonist happy, and that makes me happy. That gives me hope. If only every guy could be like our favorite fictional nice guys.

So if you happen to be alone this Valentine’s Day, please know that your dream guy is only a crack of a spine away.
