Books on Screen

Each month, our Books on Screen feature spotlights movies, television shows, miniseries and specials that are based on books of various genres --- including novels, memoirs, comics, children's books, short stories and poetry --- along with the latest DVD releases.

February 2015

Valentine's Day may be just around the corner, but if you're not into romance and hearts this February, you may want to check out the action-filled antidote, Kingsman: The Secret Service instead. Based on the comic book series, this is the story of Eggsy, an edgy teenager, who gets recruited by a secret spy organization. He joins their viciously competitive training course just in time to try to save the world from an evil genius. There's also The Duff,  in which high school student Bianca seeks to turn the school's social structure upside down.

Or if you don't want to brave the winter weather, check out all the great choices on TV and on DVD, below!

January 2015

January is one of the coldest months of the year, making it a great time to stay warm with some terrific book-to-screen adaptations. For a cozy, heartwarming time, try Paddington, the film that brings the beloved teddy bear to life and is already a huge hit in the UK. Or enjoy the Cymbeline, a gritty, explosive movie based on one of Shakespeare's plays.

December 2014

This December, celebrate the holidays by going on an adventure! You could join Bilbo and the gang as they battle for the ultimate fate of Middle Earth and defeat the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Or follow the harrowing true story of Louie Zamperini, a World War II soldier who survives a plane crash, drifts on the sea for 47 days, then spends over two years as a prisoner of war in Unbroken.

October 2014

It's October, the spookiest month of the year for movies! If you're feeling daring, check out Dracula Untold, which offers a unique twist on the most classic horror story there is, the tale of Dracula. See if you can keep your eyes open the whole time.

September 2014

It's finally September which means it's the perfect time for falling leaves, pumpkin patches, hay rides and maybe an old fashioned corn maze! Or if you like your mazes a little more adventurous, make sure to go see The Maze Runner, the highly anticipated adaptation of James Dashner's mega hit.

August 2014

Even with summer drawing to a close there's still time to check out the latest book adaptations hitting the big screen. August is a big month for YA adaptations with two beloved titles hitting the screens mid-month. First is the long-awaited The Giver, based on Lois Lowry's dystopian classic of the same name. Then comes If I Stay, inspired by Gayle Forman's moving novel about a young girl's choice between life and death --- you'll definitely want to bring a pack of tissues to this one!

If you'd rather spend a night at home after a long day of summer fun, there are a few DVDs coming to stores this month that you'll definitely want to check out. Whether you pick up Divergent or The Amazing Spiderman 2, you won't be lacking for excitement. Don't forget the popcorn!

: The Fault in Our Stars

It's finally June, and that means on June 6th it's time to grab the tissues and go see The Fault In Our Stars! Based on John Green's mega-popular bestseller, this is definitely the film YA fans are going to be talking about all summer. Whether you've read the book or not, prepare to get a little misty eyed watching the story of Hazel and Gus play out on the big screen.

May 2014

This month a couple of classic tales get the big screen treatment. You probably read THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ or GRIMM’S FAIRY TALES at bedtime when you were little. I’m sure you know the story of Dorothy and Sleeping Beauty backwards and forwards. This May, both stories get a makeover with Legends of Oz, the next chapter in Dorothy’s adventures, and Maleficent, the timeless tale of Sleeping Beauty told from the villain’s perspective.

April 2014

Whether you're a fan of superheroes, inspirational stories or heartfelt love stories, you'll find something just for you in this month's Books on Screen!
