What does “back to school” mean to you? To me, "back to school" always meant a stop at Office Depot for school supplies and then to the mall for “wardrobe supplies.” Nothing replaces the feeling of putting on your never-before-worn first day of school clothes and then pressing your shiny pen onto that crisp first page of a new notebook. Le sigh.

Oftentimes, readers remark how books can take you into a land far, far away or transport you into a character whose life is nothing like you’ve ever experienced. That’s the magic of reading, isn’t it? Well, what happens when you actually visit a place that is beyond your comfort zone? This past weekend, I ventured from New York City to Norman, Oklahoma and saw a very different part of America than the Chicago suburbs, where I grew up, and the city, where I now live.
