Better Than Perfect

Review

Better Than Perfect

Melissa Kantor is the author of eight previous novels, including MAYBE ONE DAY and CONFESSIONS OF A NOT IT GIRL. MAYBE ONE DAY is her ninth novel.

Juliet has it all --- a perfect family, a perfect boyfriend, perfect college plans and a perfect life --- or so it seems. But when Juliet’s mother goes on a downward spiral and her dad leaves, Juliet is left questioning everything that she has ever known. And then there’s Declan, the gorgeous new student who she can’t stop thinking about, the one who makes her re-think all of her previous commitments and feel as though she truly has choices in this world.  How does Juliet decide which future to go after --- should she try to be perfect, or should she live in the moment and not worry so much?

Fans of Sarah Dessen and of atypical self-discovery novels should rejoice, because BETTER THAN PERFECT is sure to delight all!

Upon first reading the back of the novel, I thought that it sounded similar to Sarah Dessen’s work. And while I was proved correct, and the book invoked thoughts of Dessen’s THIS LULLABY and LOCK AND KEY, the similarities end pretty quickly. Melissa Kantor has written a typical yet unique novel, which I say because she takes a storyline that has been done before but makes it her own. BETTER THAN PEFECT is more than the typical storyline of a girl who had it all and then lost it --- it is about a girl who feels like she has to be perfect and comes to realize that she’s doesn’t; all the studying in the world and all the volunteer work in the world won’t make her perfect.

Declan is one of the best characters that I have read in a long time.  He was understated and didn’t force Juliet to realize anything --- he was just himself. And, although not all of the characters were in the story 24/7, they each helped Juliet on her own path while not really doing anything at all.

Fans of Sarah Dessen and of atypical self-discovery novels should rejoice, because BETTER THAN PERFECT is sure to delight all!
