Bullying Under Attack: True Stories Written by Teen Victims, Bullies & Bystanders

"It's up to us to make the choice:  be a part of the problem, ignore it, or join the effort to stop it." Allyson Fontaine penned this sagacious call-to-action regarding a critical issue that continues to plague our youth today:  bullying. She is one of almost 100 teen and young adult contributors in BULLYING UNDER ATTACK, the most recent publication from Teen Ink, a magazine, book series and website written by and for teens.

Set both in prose and poetry, each gut-wrenching yet powerfully inspirational narrative describes bullying situations both inside and outside of school, followed by practical activism. Page after page describes unspeakable verbiage, horrific experiences and seemingly unquenchable hate occurring as early as second grade.

Gut-wrenching yet powerfully inspirational. . . .an incredible anthology

Although circumstances vary from one story to the next, there are consistent themes from all viewpoints that are nothing but illuminating. Victims are targeted, most frequently through cyber bullying, because of looks, social awkwardness, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race and religion. Bullies, who in many instances were bullied themselves, are victims in their own right and their needs are often overlooked in schools. Bystanders range from defending a victim to doing nothing, leaving the latter filled with unresolved guilt. They need help, too.

Complete with a plethora of resources, BULLYING UNDER ATTACK is an incredible anthology, abounding in true first-person stories and presented from three different and much-needed perspectives --- victims, former bullies and bystanders. By the close of this informative and enlightening book, both educators and young adult readers affected by bullying will not only recognize that they are not alone, but will also be encouraged to become anti-bullying advocates.
