By Your Side

Autumn Collins is close to securing her relationship with Jeff, her almost boyfriend, and is planning on making them official at a bonfire her friends are going to over the weekend. However, this is before Autumn finds herself trapped in the library for the weekend with no way of contacting anyone for help, barely any food, and worst of all, unexpected company --- her school’s infamous delinquent, Dax Miller. Autumn is convinced this will be the worst weekend ever, especially when she realizes no one is going to come rescue her; the more she gets to know Dax, though, the more she is surprised. The tough question is: will their connection live past this one weekend?

"Kasie West does not fail to please readers with a captivating plot that caused me to devour the book within a couple of days, set at the perfect pace with the perfect storyline that is guaranteed to make you swoon."

For a bibliophile like me, the premise of two people getting trapped and building chemistry in a library was pretty much a dream come true. Although I was slightly disappointed to find out that reading was not as significant to the story as I had hoped, I still fell in love with this absolutely adorable couple and their cute romance. I was quite satisfied with the realistic balance between friends, family and boyfriends that Kasie West always manages to incorporate within her novels. I especially loved Autumn’s family in this novel, and how they continuously offer her support and unconditional love. The witty banter that takes place between her and her father made me laugh during more than one occasion, and the close-knit relationship she has with both her brother and her mother made me grin from ear to ear.

This novel stands out to me from the rest of West’s publications because her characters felt achingly authentic and struggled with real problems --- Autumn with anxiety, Dax with a troubled past and Jeff with an accident --- that made them easier to understand and connect with; however, West artfully maintains a somewhat light tone while discussing such serious topics, making it both a highly enjoyable and meaningful read. It also contained one of my favorite bookish tropes, love triangles, executed in a heartfelt manner.

All in all, BY YOUR SIDE is an excellent young adult contemporary novel that I would recommend to both fans of Kasie West and newcomers alike, especially if you enjoy books by authors like Sarah Dessen, Morgan Matson or Jenny Han. Once again, Kasie West does not fail to please readers with a captivating plot that caused me to devour the book within a couple of days, set at the perfect pace with the perfect storyline that is guaranteed to make you swoon.
