Defy Me

The fifth installment of Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me series DEFY ME does not disappoint and delivers even more action, mystery and romance.

Things are beginning to go awry as Juliette, newly appointed Supreme Commander of North America, is losing her grasp on her sector. The soldiers under her power are starting to doubt if she is as invincible as they thought her to be. Outside of the sector, the other Supreme Commanders are plotting to overthrow Juliette. As she delves deeper and deeper into the Reestablishment’s secrets, she will begin to uncover the dirty truths at the root of the regime, learning more about who she really is in the process. Juliette soon learns that she cannot trust anyone, least of all herself; everything she thinks she knows may be a lie. But all hope is not lost. Revolution is brewing --- people are fed up with the Reestablishment and inspired by Juliette’s display of courage and her super powers. It is simply a matter of time before they strike.

Tahereh Mafi definitely delivered in this newest addition to the Shatter Me series. After reading the last book, I wasn’t too sure how the plot was going to pan out realistically but I was happily surprised. The plot twists kept me flipping pages and despite how far fetched some of the elements seemed, Mafi explained them in a way that made complete sense.

Mafi once again showcased her mastery for balancing and intertwining suspense and character development. I was so hooked that I finished it in one day and couldn’t put it down, even during scenes where there wasn’t any action. Mafi’s beautiful writing style, verging between prose and verse, not only makes for an incredibly enjoyable read but also makes the characters more accessible. Even though I couldn’t relate to any of the characters’ situations, I could understand everything they were going through and empathize with their pain and suffering. At some points, I even forgot about myself because I was so completely immersed in the characters.

This book was mostly centered on Warner and Juliette as individuals, as well as their complex pasts which I found very interesting and essential to better grasping their positions. However, my favorite elements from the previous books were still present. Kenji’s sense of humor and enviable friendship with Juliette were still very much present. In fact, Kenji even develops new friendships which provided some much needed comic relief. Warner and Juliette’s relationship was also further developed and gave way to many adorable scenes. Mafi also created new romances and introduced new characters (with new superpowers), which made the book all the more exciting.

Overall, DEFY ME is a book that is not to be missed by Shatter Me fans. For those who have not yet read the series, these are the books for you if you love fantasy, dystopians, mysteries and romance.
