Drop Dead Gorgeous (Return to Fear Street)

R.L. Stine’s book, DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, is a suspenseful and spine-tingling book about a girl with dark, deadly secrets moving to a small town. The story begins with beautiful and smart Morgan Marks, the new girl at Linden High School, who grabs everyone’s attention. She is immediately popular with the boys and a target of jealousy from the girls; everybody wants to be her friend. After getting to know her, students quickly realize that she is a mystery. Not even her boyfriends can get clear answers from her regarding her past because she is always vague.

"I enjoyed the suspense and typical Stine surprises. The author did an excellent job describing every scene with great detail creating vivid images in my mind."

Morgan’s transition to her new school is going smoothly until all of the sudden not only is her boyfriend found dead but the cause of death was blood sucked from his neck. The town and especially his friends are shocked and have no clue of who committed the crime. Although there is an intense investigation, nobody suspects Morgan, not even Calvin Imhoff, the local vampire hunter (don’t worry, I have not given away any secrets). Without being caught, Morgan is free to take another victim or two. Everything comes to a climax when the truth is revealed at the Linden High alumni dance. Not only do the citizens find out who the killer is, other town secrets are revealed, too.

I want to start by saying I am a big R. L. Stine fan. I especially like his Goosebumps series and have read most all the books. I have also read a few of the Fear Street novels but I have to admit that this was not one of my favorite books. I enjoyed the suspense and typical Stine surprises. The author did an excellent job describing every scene with great detail creating vivid images in my mind.

However, there were some holes in the story that made it confusing at some parts. The author left out some important details about Morgan’s background that would have helped me understand the character better. For example, Morgan’s family had no connection to vampires and Morgan just one day cut someone and drank their blood becoming one. Also, she got in a car crash and died and then somehow grabbed a needle and injected herself with the family’s “precious fluid” that brought her back to life. It is unclear how she died since vampires would not normally die in a car crash and after dying how was she able to inject herself. Also, it was unclear why the family created the “precious fluid.” That part of the story was not ever developed and left me with unanswered questions.

I would recommend this novel to people who like a scary story and are looking for a light read. Most importantly if you enjoy other R.L. Stine books, this Fear Street novel might be what you are looking for. It keeps you engaged until the very end and like Stine’s other books, there is a surprise at the end. If R. L. Stine fans can get past a couple of holes in the story, they will not be disappointed!
