Ever the Brave (A Clash of Kingdoms Novel)

After saving King Aodren from the evil Spiriter Phelia, Britta creates a bond with the King that she cannot manage to break, no matter the cost. Her dream of a quiet life in Ever Woods is being pushed aside as her newfound connection to the King causes him to insist on announcing her as a noble lady. Soon, darker forces wreak havoc on her world. Phelia will not stay away for long, and wants to harness Britta’s power for evil.

Meanwhile, Channeler girls are going missing all over Shaerdan, and the country is looking for someone to blame. As tensions between Malam and Shaerdan rise, Britta must use her new powers to try and save her country and all the Channelers before it’s too late.

"In the sequel to EVER THE HUNTED, author Erin Summerill explores how far Britta can be pushed before she can break….[her] journey through EVER THE BRAVE was truly one to behold."

In the sequel to EVER THE HUNTED, author Erin Summerill explores how far Britta can be pushed before she can break. As her new relationship with Cohen is tested by her connection to Aodren, Britta must push aside what she wants if she is to protect her country. Although the novel started off slow, it quickly was brought to pace with the politics of the Channeler Guild, and the fear of Phelia. As Phelia and Britta become more intertwined, Britta must truly figure out who she has, and what she wants, before she succumbs to the darkness.

In a change of perspective from the first novel in the series, Summerill takes a look from Aodren’s, Cohen’s and Britta’s eyes. Cohen’s protective tendencies sometimes limit Britta in a different way from EVER THE HUNTED, but including Aodren as a barrier to their relationship creates an interesting triangle, giving Britta even more struggle along with beating her enemies. Aodren’s internal battle to be a good leader adds yet another layer to the world, instead of the simple hunter mindset that belongs to Britta and Cohen. Exploring Aodren’s character was my favorite part of the book. After being controlled for most of the first book, Aodren has yet to prove himself to the world as a king. His kind-heartedness and care for his people is so sweet, and makes him a great character to read, as well as a wonderful king.

Britta’s journey through EVER THE BRAVE was truly one to behold. Her initial desire to simply live in her cottage is a stark difference from the hero she grows to be. The attitude of hers that isn’t so well placed in a king’s castle, but is so endeared by her friends that it gives her strength even when she has nothing to hope for. Her bravery against all odds makes her into a stronger character than any of her companions could dream of being.

In a country where her powers are a crime, Britta must fight the darkness that wishes to control her country, before it envelops her too.
