Evertrue: An Everneath Novel

EVERTRUE is the thrilling conclusion to Brodi Ashton’s EVERNEATH trilogy, pure escapism fiction at its best. You will be sad when it’s over.

Opening two weeks after EVERBOUND, this book focuses on Nikki and her determination to destroy the underworld. Now that Jack has escaped the tunnels and is back and stronger than ever, all Nikki wants is to be with him and graduate high school. But thanks to Cole’s trickery, Nikki is turning into an Everliving, which means she must feed on a human soon or die. Even though Jack insists that he wants her to live at whatever cost, Nikki is adamant that she would rather die than live at the expense of human forfeits. All of this pushes Jack ‘s and Nikki’s plans to destroy the Everneath into overdrive.

In the meantime, Nikki must feed on Cole to survive while she is in transition. Only the Everliving who holds her heart can feed her and since Cole has hidden Nikki’s compass/heart away somewhere, she is forced to kiss Cole every night under Jack’s watchful eye or die. “Kinky,” as Cole says. The Everneath love triangle is back and in full force. Cole loves Nikki and he hopes that by making her queen of the Everneath she will eventually come to love him as well. Ever loyal, Jack stays by Nikki’s side despite all the pain she has caused him. He says she is everything to him, and together they begin a desperate attempt to destroy the underworld using any means possible.

Ashton has written a story that makes everything we love about the Greek myths --- adventure, heroism, epic love --- come to life in the present day.

Cole is not the only one with plans for Nikki though --- the current Queen, Adonia, has not forgotten Nikki’s treachery and she is determined to crush this rebellion against her reign. The Queen captures Cole and tortures him for information about Nikki. Cole escapes but just barely. He suffers amnesia and has forgotten everything about his life except Nikki. Miraculously, Jack and Nikki are now able to convince Cole that he wants to help them destroy the Everneath. Their love triangle turns into a very strange team with each member dependent on the other for survival. Cole’s amnesia allows Nikki to glance his true soul --- which used to be hidden behind sarcasm and smugness --- and she slowly begins to realize how much she cares for him just as the final showdown arrives. Can Nikki save both of the men that she loves and save herself as well, or will she be forced to spend eternity in the Underworld?

Ashton does a wonderful job cementing the relationships between her characters in this stunning finale. The reader finally gets to watch Jack and Nikki together and understand what it is that makes their relationship so special. EVERNEATH was about Jack and Nikki falling apart and being put back together and EVERBOUND focused more on Cole’s and Nikki’s relationship with Jack’s character mostly absent, seen only in flashbacks. Perhaps one of the best things about this series is the way that Ashton takes a teen romance and literally makes her characters go through hell to be together, and yet, in the end, they still love each other for the exact same reasons.

In the EVERNEATH novels, Ashton has created a vivid and unique world that captures your heart. There is truly nothing like it. While the Persephone myth may have been the inspiration behind this story, EVERTRUE sets itself apart from every other variation. Ashton has written a story that makes everything we love about the Greek myths --- adventure, heroism, epic love --- come to life in the present day. Ashton’s characters prove over and over again the resiliency of the human spirit and her beautiful storytelling along with a suspenseful and fast paced plot made this ending bittersweet.
