Eyes Wide Open: Going Behind the Environmental Headlines (Paperback)

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to take various courses in high school that have taught me an incredible amount about the current environmental crises our world faces.

When I began reading EYES WIDE OPEN: Going Behind the Environmental Headlines by Paul Fleishman, I welcomed whatever knowledge was to come with an open mind and was thrilled to find there was an incredible amount of data and facts regarding the various different ways that environmental issues manifest themselves in our day to day lives. This was a very engaging read with the capacity to enlighten and inspire many teenagers and young adults.
This book proved to be a jack of all trades, providing images, historical references and a glossary that could allow a novice learner to become an accredited expert overnight. One of the best parts of this book was the abundance of resources that Fleishman provided for the readers. By no means was his voice the dominant force in the book --- on most pages I found an incredible amount of articles, documentaries, and studies that provided more in-depth views of the issues that were being discussed. Occasionally, my head began whirling with all of the information that was being thrown at me, but more often than not, I found myself very happy to have new names to add to my various lists of “things to read, watch, listen to etc.”

This was a very engaging read with the capacity to enlighten and inspire many teenagers and young adults.

I chose this book primarily because environmental matters are something that I am very passionate about, but I was curious as to how a piece of writing could adhere to the extremely delicate and distracted minds of today’s youth. I wanted to see if it was possible to place a pretty bow around such an ugly, massive issue. I found that this book was not for children, but structured to inform crowds mature enough to understand the importance of gaining knowledge around the environmental crises. The language was simple, but when the need for complex terms arose, they were met with fairly understandable explanations.

EYES WIDE OPEN also presents itself as a tool for budding activists. The books contains various examples of successful environmental projects but also tools to get active and create your own. Nonfiction is always a tricky genre of writing simply because reality may seem dull, but more often than not, nonfiction writers choose topics that educate the public and make them more connected citizens. EYES WIDE OPEN enhances the scope of nonfiction and features a story powerful enough to focus ideas and actions and maybe just maybe, play a hand in saving the Earth!
