Feminism Is...

written by DK Publishing with a foreword by Roxane Gay

Feminism is the support for political, economic and social equality between the various genders. Throughout the years, feminism has adjusted its definition and focused on various aspects in waves. Currently, we are in what most people call the third wave of feminism, which is focused on intersectionality --- the recognition of how different how different forms of discrimination can affect one’s life. Many authors, philosophers and psychologists have written about and discussed feminism. For example, FEMINISM IS… is a book by Alexandra Black, Laura Buller, Emily Hoyle and Dr. Megan Todd and has a foreword by Roxane Gay --- a well-known author of books like BAD FEMINIST.

"FEMINISM IS… is...like an encyclopedia that is solely focused on feminism and covers it from A to Z....a clear, concise way that most people will be able to understand."

FEMINISM IS… by Alexandra Black, Laura Buller, Emily Hoyle and Dr. Megan Todd is your go-to book for any questions you may have about feminism and its history. FEMINISM IS… starts with a foreword by Roxane Gay explaining feminism and how she became a feminist. Then, the book is divided into five sections, with each section containing articles about the different subsections of the topic such as “The Male Gaze” and “Family Values.” FEMINISM IS… contains the history behind each topic and the varying opinions of different feminists. The book also contains little biographies about well-known feminists such as Gloria Steinem, bell hooks and Malala Yousafzai.

FEMINISM IS… is a great book. Alexandra Black, Laura Buller, Emily Hoyle and Dr. Megan Todd created an incredible resource. It is like an encyclopedia that is solely focused on feminism and covers it from A to Z. The book carefully outlines the history of the many about feminism in a clear, concise way that most people will be able to understand. The book also does a great job not only in giving the history behind the issues but also explaining the issues and the complexity behind them.

My personal favorite sections of the book are the mini-biographies, the explanation of intersectionality and the emphasis on the importance of choice. The little biographies are very well done. I like how each biography goes with the section in the book that they’re in. They also manage to explain each woman very well in just a page. I also appreciate how the biographies cover a nice combination of both well-known feminists and feminists who are a little unheard of in today’s world. FEMINISM IS… also does a very good job on explaining intersectionality, which is important, as it is commonly misconceived. The book explains it in a simple easy way that practically anyone can understand. I also think that the book’s emphasis on choice is very important. What people today do not seem to understand is that feminism is all about having the right to choose from choosing how to dress to choosing how to act. FEMINISM IS… emphasizes that choice is the most important part of feminism, which is important for a novel about feminism.

FEMINISM IS… by Alexandra Black, Laura Buller, Emily Hoyle and Dr. Megan Todd is a great book that everyone should read. It is nice and short, so you don’t need to take a lot of time to read it. However, I would suggest reading the book in a group and discussing each section with those people. I feel that by doing so you can really get everything from this great book.
