Review

Furyborn (The Empirium Trilogy)

In the world of FURYBORN by Claire Legrand, people have the power to wield an element: fire, earth, wind and water along with sunlight, metal and shadows. Only a queen of the ancient prophecy --- a Sun Queen or a Blood Queen --- can wield all six elements. Lady Rielle Dardenne can wield all of them, and her abilities were discovered when she saved her best friend from an ambush; now she has to figure out if she is one of the queens, and if she is, which one. Does she have the power to save the world from ruin, or destroy it?

"FURYBORN is a novel that will take the young adult world by storm; with its amazing characters, world and writing, readers are bound to delight themselves in this deliciously dark book."

Meanwhile, a thousand years later, bounty hunter Eliana kills ruthlessly for the Empire that has conquered the kingdoms in order for her family to make ends meet. But when women and girls --- including her mother --- start mysteriously disappearing, Eliana must join a rebel captain in order to find the truth. Both of Rielle and Eliana’s lives interconnect during this long, grueling war and their fate determines the fate of the world.

FURYBORN is an immersive read; Legrand crafted this novel in a way that constantly keeps the reader intrigued and captivated. Every page kept me on the edge of my seat wanting more; it came to a point where I was reading quickly because I couldn’t get enough. The intricate world-building, complex characters and original magic system all combine to give the reader the ultimate experience. Fans of THRONE OF GLASS and “Game of Thrones” will indulge in this epic tale of magic and mayhem.

The best aspect of this story is definitely the characters. The incredibly complex and interesting cast of characters who span through the millennia was especially fun to read about, especially reading about the ones who that lived through Rielle’s time being mentioned in Eliana’s. The foreshadowing through the characters throughout this novel was brilliantly done and enhanced the story as a whole. Rielle was such an enthralling character while Eliana was such a delight to read about. Other characters such as Audric were just swoon-worthy! Other amazing aspects include Legrand’s beautiful writing style, the divine magic system and the quick pacing.

One thing I would change about this book would be the structure. At times it was confusing to keep up with the plot, characters, kingdom matters and magic system. Since the plot has so many different aspects and the world has so many layers, I would have liked for it to be explained a little bit more clearly. Luckily, the confusion didn’t last that long; this was more of a personal problem since I tend to get confused easily at the beginning of fantasy books. This did not affect my overall enjoyment.

FURYBORN is a novel that will take the young adult world by storm; with its amazing characters, world and writing, readers are bound to delight themselves in this deliciously dark book. If you have not read this yet and you are a fan of fantasy, rush to the nearest bookstore and snatch a copy before it runs out; this book is destined for success in both the young adult community and in the fantasy community.
