Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between

Clare and Aidan, high school sweethearts, have one last night together before they leave for college. Problem is, they are going to colleges on opposites of the country. They need to make a big life decision before the night is over: should they stay together and try to keep their relationship going long-distance or should they break up now, while they are still friends?

a good story for someone facing a tough decision where it feels like there are only two options and neither one is good.

HELLO, GOODBYE, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN by Jennifer E. Smith follows their night together, during which they revisit many of the places where they experienced significant firsts (where they first met, where they had their first kiss, etc.). Clare makes reasonable and logical arguments for breaking up now while Aidan, on the other hand, makes impassioned pleas for staying together. Most of the night is spent with Clare trying to convince Aidan that she is right, but at several points she waivers in her resolve and at others he starts to agree that breaking up is best.

I have mixed feelings about HELLO, GOODBYE, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN. On the one hand, it’s a viable topic for young couples, I thought the writing itself was pretty good, and I appreciated the fact that there were only a few swear words used and that sex was only a small part of the story. On the other hand, I felt like it could have been shorter --- there was a lot of repetition.  I also felt like the characters rolled their eyes an excessive amount, and I didn’t think either protagonist was particularly well-drawn. While I wouldn’t recommend HELLO, GOODBYE, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN for the strength of its writing or characters, I think it’s a good story for someone facing a tough decision where it feels like there are only two options and neither one is good.
