Hero at the Fall

Review

Hero at the Fall

Alwyn Hamilton is the award-winning young adult novelist of the Rebel of the Sands Trilogy. Hamilton was born in Canada but lived all around the world in her childhood. She studied at Cambridge University and published her first book in 2016, REBEL OF THE SANDS. The second novel, TRAITOR TO THE THRONE, followed in 2017. The conclusion to the trilogy, HERO AT THE FALL released in March 2018. She also was named the 2016 Goodreads Choice Award winner for Best Debut Author.

"As the finale of this epic trilogy, HERO AT THE FALL was everything I wanted..."

After a thrilling cliffhanger ending in TRAITOR TO THE THRONE, Amani is tasked with saving the Rebel Prince and essential members of the Rebellion from the Sultan’s imprisonment in Eremont. With Jin, Sam, and several members of the rebellion to help, Amani must assume leadership of what remains of the Rebellion. She must resort to using the assistance of Djinni and her own sacrifices to save the country she loves.

As the finale of this epic trilogy, HERO AT THE FALL was everything I wanted in conclusion. Hamilton is unflinching in creating strong characters that will truly endure anything that life throws at them. Amani’s complicated personality and loyalty are only further exemplified by this installment, and her growing relationship with Jin continued to be an entertaining side plot to the main story. The immediate goal of saving Ahmed, Shazad and defeating the Sultan was as present as ever.

The world-building of this series is breathtaking. While much of the world is not explored, there is unlimited potential for more stories in this world. Hamilton’s style of weaving first-person point-of-view with myths creates a more fantastical tone that offers a broader look at the world every few chapters. As a conclusion, it does an excellent job of tying up loose ends for the reader. The magical element of this world is only further explored with the addition of new characters, mythical beings, and magical powers. Overall, HERO AT THE FALL extended the adventure contained within the first two novels and expanded the reader’s view of the expansive world contained within its pages.

This series is likely to remind readers of the mythical style of AN EMBER IN THE ASHES, THE WRATH AND THE DAWN, and THE STAR-TOUCHED QUEEN. Readers who enjoyed the first two books will not be disappointed by this finale. The perfect length and amount of action, HERO AT THE FALL contains no slow moments. I highly recommend this trilogy to fans of fantasy, romance, or adventure.
