Hider, Seeker, Secret Keeper

Review

Hider, Seeker, Secret Keeper

When dancer Lana Dukovskaya lands a solo in The Rite of Spring, she should be thrilled, right? Anyone would be excited to have a spot in the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet's New York Tour. But Lana wouldn't even have gotten it if her friend and competitor, Daniela, hadn't just been hospitalized after a motorcycle accident. An accident where Lana herself is the prime suspect. Lana soon embarks on the tour, but she has more to deal with than arched eyebrows and whispered voices. As she juggles ambition and accusations, Lana uncovers a mysterious world, one full of secrets about not only her mother but her family’s past, one that will change her life forever.

HIDER SEEKER SECRET KEEPER by Elizabeth Kiem is a book layered with intrigue, suspense and complex relationships. I was excited to read this and enjoyed getting to know the main character Lana. With her intelligent and bold personality, it was easy to empathize with her and root for her in the battle she must face.

Lana’s personality jumps off the page; she isn’t your typical cliché protagonist, and this isn’t your typical young adult story

At first I had trouble getting into the story and its background; the writing style is wordy and didn’t always hold my attention, and the many foreign phrases and names are hard to remember, even with a glossary. Often I found myself wondering why this story was written in present tense, and kept thinking that past tense would have fit better.

However, once I got used to it, it was a very enjoyable story. The author uses her obviously expert knowledge of technical dance terms and detailed, beautiful descriptions of ballet to build a very believable world, especially with Lana’s “Danse Sacrale.” Even at times where the plot didn’t particularly interest me, Lana’s personality jumps off the page; she isn’t your typical cliché protagonist, and this isn’t your typical young adult story. This is a sequel, but you don't need to read DANCER, DAUGHTER, TRAITOR, SPY first to appreciate this book's rich world and adventure. Overall, HIDER SEEKER SECRET KEEPER is a very unique and interesting novel, one with a strong protagonist who has her share of relatable flaws. Recommended for readers who are interested in the complex world of ballet, family feuds, and of course, secrets.
