Intertwined

One gifted teen unknowingly attracts humans and creatures with supernatural abilities. Aden Stone has four souls within his body, each with a unique talent. Julian can raise the dead, Elijah can tell the future, Eve can travel through time, and Caleb can possess other bodies. Elijah has predicted Aden's death in one possible future, but within that future also lies a chance to set the souls free.

Aden has come to love the souls within him, who are unique and the only friends he has ever had. He is an orphan who has spent most of his childhood in foster homes and mental institutions, many psychiatrists having mistaken his abilities for a psychiatric disorder. Crossroads, Oklahoma, is just another town where Aden is trying to make a new start, and he has found a place to stay at a shelter for troubled youths.

Aden's dreams are occupied by romantic encounters with a pale, beautiful brunette. The dreams seem real, and Elijah keeps telling him that one possible future where Aden could meet her is the path to his death, and soon. Elijah has never been wrong in a prediction before and can see that Aden is young when he dies, like now. Aden does have a choice --- he doesn't have to meet her, and Elijah and the others warn him not to. But Aden doesn't want to forget her, and this same future also holds the possibility of releasing the souls within him.

In Crossroads, while walking by a cemetery in town, bodies begin breaking free from their graves. This is because of Julian, whose abilities are involuntary. Whenever Aden nears a gravesite, this happens. Zombies are mindless creatures that eat people, so Aden has to stop them. He has done it before, and it will happen again. He carries knives for this very reason and begins to fight his way free as half-decayed bodies grab him and begin tearing flesh away. Just then, a dark-haired girl passes the cemetery, and the bodies fall lifeless. That has never happened before without him severing their heads first; Aden's powers seem to have been neutralized by the girl. From a distance, she looks a great deal like the one in Aden's dreams, so he's driven to follow her, even while Elijah warns him not to.

The girl is Mary Ann, and she's very pretty but just a little different from the young lady Aden is dying to meet. She does indeed have a power that neutralizes the four souls' abilities whenever she's near Aden, and it seems involuntary. She's just an average girl who goes to the local high school and wants to become a psychiatrist one day, like her dad. Aden arranges to go to her school so he can get to know her, and each is fascinated by the other in a fraternal way.

After starting class together, Mary Ann and Aden discover that the event at the cemetery had more effects than they anticipated. Creatures of all kinds begin emerging, summoned by Aden unknowingly. One of these is Victoria, a vampire, the one from Aden's dreams. Her bodyguard is a werewolf who is quite taken with Mary Ann. Aden begins to spot creatures everywhere --- vampires, goblins, witches, fairies, demons and ghosts --- all trying to locate the one who summoned them. Aden is the key to all of it, but is unaware of his own power, and it may not be enough to stop the bloodshed.

INTERTWINED has the same feel of the romantic fantasy as theTwilight series. It's a fun story that's clearly written for teens, filled with tension and imagination. There is passion among humans, vampires and werewolves, which adds an interesting element. The book is well written and ends up being a real nail-biter with only a few passive creatures lurking around and a greater number of threatening ones, all too willing to begin the imminent bloodshed. Overall, INTERTWINED exceeded my expectations, and I think teens --- especially fans of Stephenie Meyer --- will have a new series to rave about as the summer winds down. The September 2010 release of the sequel, UNRAVELED, can’t come soon enough.
