My Last Kiss

Review

My Last Kiss

Bethany Neal is a brand new YA author and she brings us her exciting and mysterious debut novel MY LAST KISS.  Neal currently lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan where she locks herself up in her “writertorium” for hours of vigorous writing.  Her writing tends to lie on the dark side but it’s sprinkled with lots of romance.

This is an exciting debut novel by a young up-and-coming author and I can’t wait to see what Neal has in store for her next book.

Cassidy wakes up on a cold March morning the day after her birthday. Except that she isn’t in her bedroom, she is hovering above her dead, frozen body, which is floating under a bridge in a river.  She realizes she is a ghost but can’t recall how she died.  Memories come soaring back to her and her soul is sucked into the past, reliving each one.  Her most recent memory is with her boyfriend Ethan and their first kiss.  Then, her memory takes her to Caleb, a high school slacker.  Cassidy sees herself in various memories flirting with Caleb and even kissing him in one.  Another memory reveals her standing on a bridge next to Caleb the night of the party with a drink in her hand, but she blacks out before she can remember anything else.  Cassidy needs to find the answers behind her mysterious death, and she knows she is still on Earth for a reason.  While she visits her high school, her best friends and her family members, she tries so hard to make contact with them, but only her boyfriend Ethan can see her.  Ethan believes something else had happened that night, something darker.  Only one person knows the truth about what occurred that night on the bridge.  Ethan shared Cassidy’s first kiss, but who shared her last kiss?

MY LAST KISS is a thrilling story and flows wonderfully.  Neal takes you on Cassidy’s journey as a floating spirit and it is truly hard to put this book down.  She makes you want to know the answers to Cassidy’s death as much as the characters in her story do. This is an exciting debut novel by a young up-and-coming author and I can’t wait to see what Neal has in store for her next book.

For Cassidy Haines, the past comes back in more ways than one. Ever since her tragic fall on a bridge on her birthday party she is trying to piece back how she died. With the help of her friends and boyfriend, Ethan, Cassidy tries to fix the past. I'll admit, I loved the storyline a lot. The whole concept of the book was nice and it reminded me of THE LOVELY BONES and a bit of TOUCHING THE SURFACE by Kimberly Sabatini.

You should definitely pick it up if you like THE LOVELY BONES or TOUCHING THE SURFACE.

However, there was nothing about the story that gripped me. I found Cassidy to be boring, and the book itself to be a bit slow. I also got lost in the scenes where Cassidy’s friends try to solve the puzzle (although I did kind of put the pieces together as I approached the ending). While everything was good in general, MY LAST KISS needed something to bring the whole book together.

Overall, MY LAST KISS was an okay book, and you should definitely pick it up if you like THE LOVELY BONES or TOUCHING THE SURFACE.
