Night Star: The Immortals, Book 5

Night Star: The Immortals, Book 5

Seventeen-year-old Ever Bloom’s life changes dramatically following last year’s car crash. Not only does she lose her mom, dad, sister and dog, she has to move from her home in Oregon to the unknowns of California to live with her aunt. And that’s not all. She begins seeing peoples’ auras, knowing their thoughts and observing the future. After finally allowing the handsome and mysterious Damen back into her life, she learns the unbelievable truth: she, like Damen, is an immortal with incredible powers.

Some may think it’s pointless for an immortal to get a high school diploma, but Ever is determined to do just that. As she and Damen begin their senior year, it seems that many secrets will be revealed. Miles uncovered some information during his trip over the summer that could expose Ever’s immortality. Then Ever stumbles across some disturbing details about a past life, and she demands that Damen explain himself. This shoves a kink into their relationship and forces Ever to question her choice of Damen over Jude. And speaking of secrets, ever since her aunt Sabine found out a bit of the truth about what’s been happening in her ward’s life, she’s been going over the edge with worry. As a result, every time the two meet up at home, a heated battle erupts. Sabine is convinced that Ever is disturbed, maybe even a bit crazy, and refuses to accept her for who she is. Ever tries to remember to appreciate everything her aunt has done for her, but her patience is drying up as the animosity brews between them.

Life away from home isn’t very peaceful either. With Roman gone, so is the hope to get their hands on the antidote that would allow Ever and Damen to finally be able to touch again. Or maybe not. Ever remembers the antidote splashed onto Roman’s shirt; the resulting stain left behind a sample that may lead to a recipe. She’s positive that Haven would have saved that shirt as a link to her beloved boyfriend. Now she just has to get her hands on that article of clothing. But that may prove to be a bit difficult as her former friend now hates Ever with every fiber that’s left of Haven’s shrinking heart.

Because of this animosity, Ever knows that a huge confrontation with Haven is inevitable. So while Ever watches her float to the top of the popularity pyramid, with her newfound beauty, wealth and power, she’s peering around corners waiting for the fury to erupt. Both know the battle is coming, and Ever is preparing herself for the ultimate fight. Both know that it promises to be a battle to the death --- which for an immortal means an eternity in Shadowland.

Alyson Noël continues to write amazing stories that sizzle. NIGHT STAR jumps right into high action and never slows down, not even after the last page. Her writing is intense and vivid, pulling readers into the depths of her imagination. She cleverly weaves in the horrors of bullying, and the wounding effects on the hearts and souls of those involved. She also offers up a few inspirational passages, including Miles’s speech about his reasons for remaining mortal, that may remind readers to appreciate the gifts of life.

Another inspiring passage comes from Ever’s other friend, Ava. She offers these words of wisdom: “When you put all of your focus on a problem, you just get more of the problem. But if you put your focus on being of help, then your energy is directed toward the help instead of the problem… So basically, whenever you’re looking for a solution, you are feeling positive emotion --- and whenever you’re looking at a problem, you’re feeling negative emotion, which as you know, never gets us anywhere. But once you take the focus off yourself and your wants, and instead turn it toward how getting what you want might also benefit someone else, well then, you can’t help but succeed… That’s the key behind any success.”

Fans will look forward to the next book --- releasing in the summer of 2011 --- with bittersweet enthusiasm, as it will be the final installment in the series.
